Why is this recipe safe to eat?

While the Food and Drug Administration has always warned against indulging in spoonfuls of raw dough or batters, this recipe is an exception to that warning.

Unlike traditional brownie batter, which typically includes raw eggs and raw flour that may contain bacteria if uncooked, this edible brownie batter is eggless and uses heat-treated flour.

Since all the risky factors that make traditional batters and dough unsafe are omitted, this recipe is completely safe to consume for both adults and children.

This edible batter is packed with intense flavors that’ll surely satisfy everyone in your circle with a sweet tooth. The best part about this dessert? There’s so much more to love about it beyond its taste.

  • It takes less than 20 minutes to make. Traditional brownies often require 20 minutes or longer to just finish baking. But with this recipe, you’ll already have your dessert ready at the table in that same amount of time.
  • It’s not just a standalone dessert. You can use this edible brownie batter as a dip for fresh fruits or pretzels. Alternatively, you can incorporate it into your homemade ice cream to create a delicious frozen treat.
  • This edible brownie batter recipe is a customizable delight. You can add mix-ins of your choice to the batter, such as chocolate chunks, peanut butter, and various nuts.

🥘 Ingredients

Edible Brownie Batter ingredients.

Most, if not all, of these ingredients, are already pantry staples, so you can enjoy these chocolaty and chewy treats without needing to drop by the grocery store.

  • All-purpose flour: This will provide structure and thickness to your batter. Remember to sift your flour beforehand to ensure a smooth batter consistency.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: This key ingredient will be responsible for giving your brownies that rich chocolate flavor.
  • Melted butter: It’s better to use unsalted so you can have better control over the salt in your recipe.
  • Brown sugar: This provides a caramel-like sweetness to your batter, perfectly complementing the creamy texture of the melted butter.
  • Milk: Any milk will do, but I prefer using whole milk.
  • Vanilla extract: Use pure vanilla extract to significantly enhance the aroma of your brownie batter.
  • Chocolate chips: Any kind will do. I personally love using dark chocolate chips in mine for that extra intense flavor of cocoa.

See recipe card for quantities.

🔀 Substitutions

All-purpose four: If you have dietary restrictions, you can use a gluten-free flour blend or almond flour as a substitute.

Cocoa powder: Melted unsweetened baking chocolate can be used as a substitute for cocoa powder to achieve a more intense chocolate flavor.

Melted butter: A quick swap for melted butter is vegetable oil or coconut oil.

Chocolate chips: If you’re not too much of a chocolate person, you can replace the chocolate chips with chopped nuts or dried fruits instead.

🌈 Variations / Options / Add-Ins

Here are some interesting flavor variations you can apply to either half of the batter or the entire batch.

  • Mocha: Give your dessert a coffee kick by adding some instant coffee or espresso powder to your batter.
  • S’mores delight: You can incorporate mini marshmallows and some crushed graham crackers into your batter to give it the familiar and cozy flavors of s’mores.
  • Mint-choco combo: It may not be everyone’s favorite, I know. But if you’re a fan of mint chocolate, consider adding a few drops of peppermint extract to your batter for that refreshing minty taste reminiscent of mint chocolate ice cream.
  • Vegan version: To make this dessert vegan, simply substitute the butter with coconut oil and use dairy-free milk and chocolate chips.

If you’re serving this edible brownie batter to your guests, I highly recommend giving them this brownie mix in a jar as a gift before sending them home!

🥄 Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools

The beauty of this edible brownie batter is that you can make it as long as you have an oven! Just get these cooking tools out of your kitchen cabinet to ensure a smooth cooking process later.

  • Electric mixer: If you don’t want to strain your arm trying to mix this batter, you should use an electric mixer.
  • Baking sheet: You’ll need this to heat-treat your flour in the oven later.
  • Medium mixing bowl: You may also use a large mixing bowl but don’t opt for one smaller than medium.

🔪 How to Make Edible Brownie Batter

Ingredients out, tools ready, follow these steps to make an edible batter!

Step 1: Preheat your oven

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2: Heat-treat the flour

Spread the all-purpose flour evenly onto a baking sheet. Once your oven is hot enough, bake the flour for 8 minutes. Make sure to stir your flour halfway through to ensure that all sides are evenly cooked.

Step 3: Let the heat-treated flour cool

I recommend letting it cool for about 30 minutes. Once your flour has cooled down, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Combine butter and sugars

In your mixing bowl, beat together the melted butter and sugars. Mix them for about 2 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Step 5: Add milk and vanilla extract

Pour them into your mixing bowl and beat until well combined.

Milk and vanilla extract are added to the mixture.

Step 6: Combine dry ingredients (except the chocolate chips)

In a separate bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients, including cocoa powder, salt, and heat-treated flour.

Step 7: Add dry ingredients to the batter

Pour the combined dry ingredients into the batter and mix it once again until no dry streaks remain.

Step 8: Add chocolate chips

Add as much or as little as you prefer. If you have other mix-ins, such as nuts, marshmallows, or dried fruits, feel free to incorporate them into your batter according to your taste.

Chocolate chips are added to the batter.

Step 9: Refrigerate

For the best taste and texture, this edible brownie batter is best served chilled. So, keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve!

❓ Recipe FAQs

Can you reheat edible brownie batter?

Yes, you can. While edible brownie batter is typically served chilled, you can also reheat it if you prefer to eat it warm. Just note, though, that reheating it may slightly alter its texture.

How do you store edible brownie batter?

When kept in an airtight container, edible brownie batter can last up to 7 days in the fridge. Heads up, though, that keeping this batter inside the refrigerator will firm it up. So, you may want to leave your chilled batter out at room temperature for about 10 minutes before eating it.

Why do you need eggs in brownie mix?

In a traditional brownie batter, the egg keeps all the ingredients together so your brownie can maintain its structure. However, eggs are unnecessary for this edible batter as you won’t need your dessert to take on a specific form.
