WHAT IS PEPPERMINT?

Peppermint is actually a plant. The plant is a hybrid that comes from blending the watermint plant and the spearmint plant.

Peppermint leaves and oil are used to add flavor and fragrance to all sorts of recipes from food to beauty.

There are actually some very good science-backed health benefits of peppermint. It has been used to treat indigestion, anxiety, muscle cramps and even the common cold.

Did I mention that the flavor of peppermint also tastes great in ice cream? 🙂

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST PEPPERMINT ICE CREAM

I have made so many batches of homemade no churn ice cream I can almost do it in my sleep now! The best part is that you do not need an ice cream maker to create a delicious and creamy ice cream dessert. This is so much better than store bought!

STEP ONE: BEAT CREAM

The first step in almost any no churn ice cream recipe is to beat the heavy whipping cream with a mixer until it is nice and thick. I love to use my Kitchen Aide stand mixer for this because it will take a few minutes.

STEP TWO: ADD MILK AND PEPPERMINT

Pour the sweetened condensed milk and the peppermint extract into the mixing bowl and fold these in until the mixture is smooth.

STEP THREE: ADD COLOR

If you want to make this ice cream a pretty pink color now is the time to add the food coloring gel.

It takes 1-3 drops of pink food coloring gel to get a beautiful pink color.

STEP FOUR: LAYER

Spoon 1/2 the ice cream mixture into a freezer-safe loaf pan or container. Sprinkle 1/2 the peppermint chips over the top of the ice cream.

Spoon the remaining ice cream over the peppermint chips.

Sprinkle the remaining chips over the top and swirl the chips into the ice cream, if desired.

NOTE: There are crunchy peppermint baking chips, which are basically crushed peppermint candy canes. You can also get Ghiradelli Peppermint Baking Chunks which are a softer type of chip. These are usually seasonal at Christmas time, but thanks to Amazon you can order them year-round!

STEP FIVE: FREEZE

Place the container in the freezer for 5-6 hours or overnight.

When you are ready to eat the ice cream, remove the pan from the freezer and let it sit out for 5-10 minutes to soften before serving. Try it topped with this Homemade Ice Magic Recipe.
