WHAT IS A HOME INVENTORY?

A home inventory is a detailed breakdown of everything you own within your home.

The household inventory comes in very handy in the event your home is damaged or destroyed in a fire, tornado, hurricane, earthquake or other natural disasters. It will also help if you have a home burglary.

If you are able to present a detailed home inventory to your insurance adjuster or the police it will make the process of claims much simpler.

Remember that if you need a home inventory something serious has occurred and it will be difficult to remember everything you owned during a stressful situation.

It is important to do a home inventory for peace of mind.

HOW TO DO A HOME INVENTORY

Completing a home inventory is simple but may take a little time.

The first step is to print off this home inventory printable packet (scroll down to print).

The next step is to do a slow walk through of your home room by room. Use the printable inventory sheets to list out your belongings.

There is room on the sheet to list make and model or serial number for items that have a make and model or serial number.

If you have receipts for these items they can be attached to the document. Take pictures or videos as you walk through and be sure to store the video and photos in the cloud so you can access them from anywhere.

Once you are done the household inventory needs to be stored in a fireproof safe or offsite in a safety deposit box.

WHAT SHOULD I DOCUMENT IN THE HOUSEHOLD INVENTORY?

A common question is what should I document in the inventory?

Do small items count? Should I only document expensive items?

Remember that if you had to start completely over and purchase every single item you currently own, how much money that would cost. Even small items add up when you are looking at replacing the items.

The printable packet has a list of suggestions for items that should probably be documented.

Here is a quick overview of items you will want to include in your inventory:

  • Furniture
  • Artwork
  • Housewares

    • I looked up your email that shows up with the comment you left, and it says there isn’t anyone that’s signed up with that email. Did you try signing up with a different email address?

    • I checked my email list and when I searched for your email address, it says there aren’t any email subscribers with that address. Usually if you’ve signed up, but haven’t confirmed yet, it will show your email address and say unconfirmed. Maybe try putting your email address in the form again, and then check your spam to make sure the confirmation email didn’t end up in spam. If it’s in your spam, mark it as not spam and then confirm it. If that doesn’t work, let me know and I can manually add you to my email list.

    • On desktop, in the left sidebar when you’re logged into Airtable, look for “Bases shared with me” in the workspaces section. You should see the Wondermom Printables base there.
