How to Decorate Cupcakes Using Fondant?

Fondant is more versatile than traditional frosting because you can use it to make three-dimensional shapes. It’s also more precise than piping with frosting because it’s easier to cut a straight line out of fondant than it is to pipe on a straight line of frosting.

You can use cutters to create uniform shapes, or press down on the edges of rolled fondant to give it a more natural look. You can also use water or buttercream to attach decorations to cupcakes.

An important thing to remember when you are shaping the fondant, is to make sure that your work area is completely clean. Otherwise, the fondant will pick up anything that’s on that work area.

If you want to add any designs on the fondant, you can paint on it or write on it with edible ink markers. You can look at these Princess Anna Mickey ears cupcakes to see an example.

🥘 Ingredients

The Devil Cupcakes only require a few simple ingredients that are easy to find at your local grocery store. Gather these ingredients and get ready to make a tasty treat that your kids can help out with.

Ingredients for making spooky Halloween Devil Cupcakes.
  • Chocolate cake box mix: This makes it really easy to make the cupcakes. You can use any brand you prefer.
  • Red gel food coloring: Gel food coloring is more concentrated than liquid food coloring so it gives vibrant, bold colors and doesn’t negatively alter the consistency of the frosting.
  • Black fondant: If you get ready-to-use fondant that’s already colored, you’ll save yourself the extra steps of having to make it yourself.

See recipe card for complete list of ingredients and quantities.

🔀 Substitutions

Cake Mix: If you want to make these cupcakes from scratch, you can use your favorite homemade devil’s food cake recipe.

Black fondant: If you prefer, you can use homemade fondant (made with marshmallows, powdered sugar, and black food coloring).

🌈 Variations / Options / Add-Ins

There are so many ways that you can personalize these Halloween cupcakes. Here are a few of my favorite tips for jazzing these sweets up.

Red velvet cupcakes: Use a red velvet cake mix instead of chocolate to match the devilish red theme. Adjust the food coloring in the frosting to complement the cake’s color.

Chocolate chips: Fold in mini chocolate chips or chunks into the batter for extra texture and chocolatey goodness.

Edible Glitter or Sprinkles: Add some sparkle with red or black edible glitter or sprinkles for extra flair.

🥄 Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools

You only need a few kitchen tools to help you make these Halloween cupcakes.  Grab these tools and get ready to enjoy this festive treat.

  • Cupcake tin: If the bottom of your cupcake tin is starting to rust, it’s time to buy a new one.
  • Large mixing bowl: These mixing bowls are nice because the bottom is non-skid.
  • Piping bag with #12 tips: It’s much easier to frost the cupcakes using a piping bag.

👩‍🍳 Pro Tips

Here are a few tips for this Halloween recipe to help make your experience even better.

  • Most cake mix recipes make 24 cupcakes, but for this recipe, you only need 12. I recommend that you either split the cake mix and ingredients in half, or you can double the frosting and horns and make 24 of these spooky desserts.
  • Be careful not to overmix the cake mix. Overmixing can lead to tough cupcakes.
  • Make sure to allow the cupcakes to cool completely before adding the frosting. If they are too warm, the frosting will melt and run.
  •  If you want a more intense red color, you can always add more food coloring until you reach the desired shade.
  •  If you have any leftover frosting, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  • Insert a toothpick into the center of the cupcake to see if it’s done. If it comes out clean they are ready.
