Is Fudge Hard to Make?

A lot of people believe that fudge is hard to make. I agree that making traditional old-fashioned fudge can be a little tricky if you are new to the trade.

Fudge can become too hard, too soft or even a little bit grainy tasting if you don’t do it right. There are a lot of common fudge problems that people encounter that are easily fixed.

However, here’s a little secret…I rarely make old-fashioned fudge because it does involve some precision and it is a little more work then this busy mom wants to do.

The awesome news is that this Halloween fudge recipe is not the same as old-fashioned fudge and it is very easy to make โ€” easy enough for busy moms like me (and you).

๐Ÿฅ˜ Ingredients

Bowls with orange candy melts, white chocolate chips, yellow candy melts for making Halloween Fudge.

Four simple ingredients are all you need for this simple candy corn fudge recipe. I like to keep a variety of candy melts on hand because they are so fun to work with and an easy way to spruce up desserts.

  • Orange Candy Melts: These candy melts provide a bright, visually appealing orange color and a sweet, creamy flavor that complements the other ingredients.
  • Yellow Candy Melts: They add a bright yellow color and a sweet taste.
  • White Candy Melts or Chocolate Chips: These form the base layer of the confection, providing a sweet, creamy flavor. They also help in binding the other ingredients together as they harden when cooled, giving structure to the fudge.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: This adds sweetness, richness, and moisture to the mixture. The amount used determines the texture of the fudge, making it softer or firmer depending on the quantity.

See recipe card for complete list of ingredients and quantities.

๐Ÿ”€ Substitutions

Sweetened Condensed Milk: You can use evaporated milk mixed with sugar as a substitute, though the texture and sweetness may vary slightly. Coconut sweetened condensed milk can be used for a dairy-free version.

White Chocolate Chips or White Candy Melts: Almond bark, vanilla-flavored candy coating, or regular milk chocolate chips can be used as a substitute if you donโ€™t mind a slight flavor difference. Vegan white chocolate is an option for a dairy-free alternative.

๐Ÿฅ„ Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools

You only need a couple of things from your kitchen to help you make this pretty candy corn treat.

  • Loaf pan: This is where you’ll assemble the layers of the fudge.
  • Microwave-safe bowls: You’ll need three bowls for melting each color of candy melts.

๐Ÿ”ช How to Make Halloween Fudge

This really is a simple fudge recipe that doesn’t use any food coloring. Halloween candy has never tasted so good or looked so pretty.

Step 1: Prepare the pan

Start off by lining a loaf pan or small baking pan that is around 9″ x 4″ with foil or parchment paper. Then spray the foil or parchment with non-stick cooking spray.

This step will make removal from the pan later much easier.

Step 2: Melt the White Candy

Place the white candy melts or chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl.

Place the bowl in the microwave and melt for about 30 seconds, stir and continue heating in 30-second intervals until the candy is smooth and melted. Always stir after each 30-second interval.

When the candy is melted, remove from the microwave and stir in 3-4 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk. The more milk you add in the softer the fudge will be.

Fold the mixture into the loaf pan and smooth the layer down in the pan using the back of a spoon or an offset spatula.

Step 3: Melt the Orange Candy

Place the orange candy melts into a microwave-safe bowl.

Place the bowl in the microwave and melt for about 30 seconds, stir and continue heating in 30-second intervals until the candy is smooth and melted. Always stir after each 30-second interval.

When the orange candy is melted, remove from the microwave and stir in 3-4 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk.

Fold the mixture into the loaf pan and smooth it down on top of the white layer in the pan using the back of a spoon or an offset spatula.

Step 4: Melt the Yellow Candy

Now place the yellow candy melts into a microwave-safe bowl.

Place the bowl in the microwave and melt for about 30 seconds, stir and continue heating in 30-second intervals until the candy is smooth and completely melted. Always stir after each 30-second interval.

When the yellow candy is melted, remove from the microwave and stir in 3-4 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk. The more milk you add in the softer the fudge will be.

Fold the mixture into the loaf pan and smooth it down on top of the orange layer in the pan using the back of a spoon or an offset spatula.

Step 5: Refrigerate

This is the hard part โ€” waiting for the Halloween fudge to set up.

Place the pan in the refrigerator and let it sit for at least 3 hours or until firm. I usually just keep mine in there overnight.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

When it is totally set up you can cut it into squares, put them on a platter or plate and enjoy.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ Pro Tips

Here are a few tips for this Halloween recipe to help make this recipe even better.

  • When melting candy melts or chocolate, use a microwave at 50% power to avoid overheating, which can cause the chocolate to seize or burn.
  • Allow each layer to set in the fridge for a few minutes before adding the next layer. This helps keep the layers distinct and prevents them from blending together.
  • If you have silicone molds, they can be a great alternative to a loaf pan, as they donโ€™t require lining and make popping out the candy easier.
  • Dip your knife in hot water, wipe it dry, and then use it to cut the candy. The warm knife will glide through the candy more smoothly, giving you cleaner cuts.

โ“ Recipe FAQs

How do you store this Halloween fudge?

Store the finished candy in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Humidity can cause candy to become sticky, so store it in a cool, dry place.

If you need to store it longer, keep it in the fridge and let it come to room temperature before serving to maintain the best texture.

How do I prevent the layers from mixing together?

Make sure each layer is slightly set in the fridge (usually about 10 – 15 minutes) before adding the next one. This will help keep the layers distinct.

Why did my candy mixture become lumpy or grainy?

This can happen if the candy melts or chocolate are overheated, causing them to seize. To prevent this, melt the candy melts or chocolate slowly, using a microwave at 50% power and stir frequently.
