What is a Green Smoothie?
The most obvious feature of a green smoothie is the color. Green smoothies are, without exception, green.
The fascination with green smoothies has more to do with the key ingredients though. Green smoothies typically get their trademark color from fresh leafy green vegetables.
Dark, leafy greens are superfoods that are packed with:
- Fiber
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin K
- Folate
- Calcium
- Iron
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Antioxidants (beta-carotene, lutein)
They protect us from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (from “Health Benefits of Dark-Leafy Greens“). And they do all this without adding a lot of calories or fat to our diet.
Most of us struggle to consume as many vegetables as we should for ideal health. This is especially hard when you have a busy family life.
That’s why green smoothies are so popular. They’re such an easy (and delicious) way to get a large portion of your vegetables each day.

Easy Green Smoothie Ingredients
This Easy Green Smoothie contains just a few simple ingredients.
First we start with the star ingredient – spinach.

Next, we add kiwi for some sweetness and more green.

We need something to give our smoothie some texture, so I use apples. I don’t like mine overly sweet, so I use green apples, but you can also substitute a sweeter, red variety. It won’t affect the color since we peel them before adding them to the smoothie.

We want our smoothie to be nice and creamy, so add some yogurt next. You can use plain, but I usually use vanilla for just a little added flavor and sweetness.

It’s a beverage, so we’ll need some liquid. I like milk for the added calcium and because it’s creamier than juice or water. If you have digestive issues, and want to make a low FODMAP smoothie, just use non-dairy milk (e.g. almond milk).

Toss in a few ice cubes and you’re ready to blend.

Blend for about a minute, until it’s nice and smooth. Your easy green smoothie is ready to drink!
