These DIY Fabric Mason Jar Lid Ornaments are a perfect way to repurpose jar lids and fabric scraps.
They’re also really easy to make so you can whip up enough for all your friends while you watch your favorite Christmas special. Plus, depending on the age of your kids, they can either help with some of this project or all of it.
These fabric ornaments are easy to customize by choosing fabric in different colors and patterns, just like these Easy Curled Ribbon Ornaments and Washi Tape Ornaments. Small changes in embellishments and the hanging loop can make a big difference in the overall look.

Creative Ways to Customize Your Mason Jar Lid Ornaments
- Layered Fabrics and Textures: Look through your fabric stash and see what you have. Then, use the scraps to create multiple layers of fabric, such as burlap, lace, or velvet, to create depth and a unique texture.
- Find Personalized Photos: Choose (or print) a photo or vintage image that will fit in the middle of the ornament. Then, cut out a circular piece of cardboard or cardstock that’s slightly larger than the middle, glue the photo or image to that and then glue the backing to the fabric.
- Add Mini Embellishments: Add tiny embellishments such as buttons, bells, mini pinecones, glittery snowflakes, or small wooden letters. Personalize it by adding things that fit the recipient like wooden letters with their initials or charms that reflect their interests, such as a music note, paw print, a symbol of a sport or profession, or travel-related charms.
- Use Different Themes or Colors: Customize each ornament with specific themes, like rustic (burlap and pine), vintage (lace and pearls), or modern (bright colors and metallic accents). Choose the person’s favorite colors or colors that fit their favorite sports team, school, wedding colors, etc.
- Add Beads or Sequins: Glue beads or sequins onto the fabric for a bit of sparkle that catches the holiday lights. You can personalize the beads or sequins according to the person’s interests or favorite colors.
Materials Needed
You don’t need very many supplies to make these ornaments and you probably already have most of them in your craft supplies. The amount of fabric and jar lid rings are enough to make two ornaments.
- 1/8 yard of cotton fabric: Look through your craft stash or local craft store for whatever color fabric you want to use. Cotton is easy to cut and manipulate, comes in lots of colors and patterns, will still look nice year after year, and is inexpensive.
- 2 mason jar lid rings: If you have any around the house that you’re not using, you can use those, or you can actually purchase just the rings.
- Scissors or rotary cutter: A rotary cutter will make it much easier to cut the fabric, but if you don’t have one, you can just use scissors.
- Glue Gun or floral pins: When you add an embellishment, you can use floral pins to attach it to the wreath or just use a hot glue gun to add it on.
- Ribbon or twine: You’ll add this to the top of the ornament for hanging the ornament on the tree. You can also tie the ribbon into a bow and add it to the bottom of the ornament as an added decoration.
- Decorative embellishments (optional): This is a great way to personalize the ornament by adding things that reflect the interests of the recipient.
How to Make a Fabric Mason Jar Lid Ornament
This ornament is fast and easy to make. After you’ve gathered your basic supplies, you’ll have a couple of wreath ornaments made in just about 15 minutes.
Step 1: Cut the Fabric
First, you need to cut the fabric into strips that are roughly the same size and shape. You can use scissors, but if you have a rotary cutter I recommend that since it’s faster and easier.
I cut mine so they were one inch wide and seven inches long. If you have older kids (older elementary and up), they can help with this part.
Feel free to use a variety of fabric scraps to create a more colorful and interesting ornament. Overall, you’re going to need 1/8 yard of fabric for every two rings (about 24 1″x7′” strips per ring).
Step 2: Tie the Strips
Next, take each piece of fabric and pass one end through the center of the jar lid. Hold the ends so that they are even lengths (with the jar lid hanging in between) and tie a knot.
Keep adding strips and tie each one in a knot, until the ring is covered completely. If your kids can tie a knot they can help with this part, or if they can just tie it once around the lid, you can finish the knot.
Step 3: Add Ribbon and an Embellishment
Now you just need to add a loop of ribbon or twine to the ornament so it can be hung on the tree.
If you want, you can add a small bow or other embellishment (Christmas craft buttons and charms work great) for extra flair. If you have older kids, they should be able to help with this step, or if you have younger kids, they can help you choose what to add.
Step 4: Hang or Gift the Ornament
Your ornament is ready to hang on the tree if you and your kids made it for your own tree. You can also attach the ornaments to a length of twine or ribbon, alternating with greenery or small holiday decorations to create a garland for your mantel, stair rails, or doorways.
If you made it to give away you can attach it to a gift as a festive decoration, or this can be the gift โ like a special handmade gift from your kids to their teacher, family or friends. You can also give them as party favors for holiday gatherings; each guest can take home a unique ornament to remember the event.
Ideas for Leftover Craft Supplies
Now that you’re done making the ornaments, you might have some leftover craft supplies. So, if you’re still in the crafting mood, here are some other things you can make using these same supplies.
