Ingredients

You only need a handful of simple ingredients to help you make these chewy chocolate chip cookies.  All of these ingredients are easy to find at your local grocery store this holiday season.

  • Flour – For this recipe, you will need plain all-purpose flour.  You can use your favorite brand, I  typically just purchase store brands.
  • Butter – For this recipe, I used salted sweet cream butter.
  • Peppermint Extract – It’s important that you make sure to use peppermint extract instead of a mint extract; there is a flavor difference between the two.

Substitutions

Butter: If you don’t have salted butter on hand you can use unsalted butter for these cookies.

Milk: I prefer to use whole milk when baking, because the fat adds flavor and moisture, however you can use a lower fat option if you prefer.

Variations / Options / Add-Ins

Here are a few ways that you can personalize this delicious recipe.

Candy canes: Add crushed candy canes to the top of your cookies for a festive touch.

Chocolate chips: Swap out regular chocolate chips for white chocolate chips or dark chocolate chunks for something different.

Coloring: You can add food coloring to make these cookies even more fun! If you decide to add color to them, I recommend using food coloring gel instead of liquid food coloring.

Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools

You only need a handful of kitchen tools to help you make this easy recipe. You should already have all of the kitchen tools in your kitchens.

  • electric mixer – you can use a hand mixer or a stand mixer
  • cookie sheets – I prefer to use nonstick cookie sheets that are lined with parchment paper

Pro Tips

Here are a few tips to help make sure that your frosted peppermint cookies turn out perfectly every time that you make them.

  • Make sure that your butter is at room temperature before you start making these cookies. You want to make sure that cookie dough is smooth, and using cold butter results in clumpy dough.
  • Be careful to not overmix your cookie dough once you add the flour. Overmixing can result in a tough cookie.
  • If possible, let your cookies cool before decorating them with frosting. This will help the frosting to set and stick better.
