Creative Ways to Customize Your Mason Jar Lid Ornaments

  • Add a Face: On the top ring, add black buttons or small black beads for eyes and mouth and orange felt to make a carrot nose. Lay them out on the ring before you glue them down to make sure it looks the way you want.
  • Change the Scarf: Swap the plaid ribbon for other patterns or colors like glittery ribbon, burlap, or colorful fabric scraps from your craft stash. You can also twist pipe cleaners for a sparkly scarf alternative.
  • Add a hat: Attach a small top hat made of felt or cardstock to the top ring. Another option is to use a mini knit cap or make one from an old sock.
  • Make Earmuffs: Hot glue pom-poms and a small wire or pipe cleaner around the top ring for cute earmuffs.
  • Snowy Addition: Glue fake snow, white glitter, or small snowflake sequins to the rings.

Materials Needed

You don’t need very many supplies to make these ornaments and you probably already have most of them in your craft supplies. The amount of supplies listed below are enough to make two ornaments.

How to Make a Mason Jar Lid Snowman Ornament

If you have 15 minutes and a moderately stocked craft bin, you can make these right now.

Step 1: Wrap Twine Around the Lids

First, you need to cover the mason jar lids with jute twine. Glue one end of the jute twine to the inside of each mason jar lid.

Four twine-wrapped rings are arranged on a white wooden surface.

Wrap the twine around the ring until the entire ring is covered — your kids can definitely help with this part. Do this with each lid.

Step 2: Make Hanging Loops

Next, you’re going to create the loops used to hang the ornaments on the tree. Make a loop with the twine and glue it to the back of each of the small lid rings.

Step 3: Glue Rings Together

Now it’s time to stack the rings to create the snowmen. Glue the small ring to the top of the large ring.

Step 4: Add the Scarf

To finish off the snowmen, you just need to add the scarf. Cut a piece of ribbon and tie it around the snowman where the rings meet.

Finish the knot and glue the top flap down to the bottom one with a dot of glue so the ribbon retains the look of a scarf.

Step 5: Customize (Optional)

If you want to customize your ornaments as suggested above, now would be the time to do that. After that, your snowman ornament is ready to hang on the tree or give as a gift.
