What is a Fun Fact About Caesar Salad?

You’re going to love this fact about Caesar salad because it sounds just like something a mom would do.

It’s not quite clear where Caesar salad comes from but one of the stories is that a French-inspired Italian-American chef Caesar Cardini invented the salad in Mexico in 1924 at his restaurant in Tijuana.

The story is that on the 4th of July weekend Caesar didn’t have enough ingredients/food for all of the customers so he threw together what was left in the kitchen. He had lettuce, olive oil, dried bread, raw egg, parmesan cheese and Worcestershire sauce, which thrown together, became a Caesar salad.

This salad recipe now has so many different variations, including this version of Caesar chicken salad sandwiches. However, all of the versions are just like the original one—they’re all made by throwing together whatever ingredients you have on hand—just like a mom would do.

❤️ Why You’ll Love This Recipe

If you love Caesar salad but want to try a different version than your usual one, you’re going to love these Caesar chicken salad sandwiches:

  • Great way to use leftovers: If you have leftover rotisserie chicken, you can use it to make these sandwiches.
  • Very flavorful: The salad dressing, mayo, shallot and cheese all combine with the chicken to give it a delicious, creamy flavor.
  • Super easy to make: All you have to do is mix the ingredients, a few at a time, and in about 5 minutes, you’ll have your lunch ready to chill.

Another sandwich that’s full of protein and easy to take on the go is an egg salad sandwich without mustard (so the kids will eat it too).

🥘 Ingredients

ingredients for making Caesar chicken salad sandwiches.

All you need are five ingredients to make these sandwiches, and you probably already have them all at home.

  • Shredded chicken: The easiest thing is to just shred leftover rotisserie chicken.
  • Caesar salad dressing: No need to mix together several ingredients to make a dressing, just use one that’s already made.
  • Red shallot: This is better than using an onion because it has a more delicate sweet flavor, rather than the strong flavor of an onion.

🔀 Substitutions

Mayonnaise: Substitute with Greek yogurt, sour cream, or a blend of half Greek yogurt and half mayo for a lighter option.

Parmesan: If you prefer a different type of cheese, you can use Romano cheese or Asiago cheese.

🌈 Variations / Options / Add-Ins

Here are some ideas to change up the recipe based on your flavor preferences:

  • Mediterranean: Keep the chicken, dressing and cheese the same, but reduce the mayo to 1/2 cup and replace the shallot with 1/4 cup diced red onion. Then, add 1/4 cup diced sun-dried tomatoes, 1/4 cup chopped Kalamata olives, and a handful of fresh basil leaves.
  • Avocado: The only thing you need to change is reduce the mayo to 1/2 cup. Then, add 1 ripe avocado, mashed, and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice.
  • Crunchy: Keep everything the same—and add 1/4 cup chopped celery, 1/4 cup chopped bell peppers, and 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts.

🥄 Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools

You don’t need many things to make this chicken salad.

  • Mixing bowl: You’ll need a mixing bowl to mix all of the ingredients together. These bowls are nice because the bottoms are non-slip.
  • Knife and cutting board: You’ll need this to chop the shallot. This set is dishwasher safe.
  • Measuring cups: These measuring cups set have all the different things you need to measure the wet and dry ingredients in this recipe.

🔪 How to Make Caesar Chicken Salad Sandwiches

Aside from the awesome taste, another great thing about these Caesar Chicken Salad Sandwiches is that they are so incredibly easy to make. Just 5 ingredients and very little effort, then lunch is ready.

Step 1: Make the Sauce

Simply mix the mayonnaise and Caesar dressing together in a large mixing bowl.

Step 2: Add Remaining Ingredients

Next, add the chicken to the sauce and stir until it’s combined well. Then, add the shallots and cheese.

Mix well. Then transfer to a storage container and cover (or simply cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap).

Step 3: Refrigerate

Though you can eat the Caesar chicken salad right away, it tastes so much better if you let the flavors combine for a little while. I like to make it the night before for sandwiches the next day, but if I’m making it the same day I aim for a minimum of 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

If you’re on a low-carb diet, simply eat it out of a bowl (you should also try these Keto Chicken Thighs). You can also serve it in lettuce leaves to add a crisp, fresh element.

I like to use it as a sandwich filling. This way I can eat it on the go.
