When you are pregnant for the first time, experienced parents are constantly warning you that your entire life is going to change and that time is going to start passing much more quickly. I believed them when they told me this and yet, was still unprepared for just how right they were. It seems like I became a mother just a short while ago, but then I blinked and my first born was headed off to college.

That is probably why, despite the fact that my son is taller and stronger than me and is by all accounts, a smart and responsible man, I still feel the need to look after him. Since he is going to school so far from home (halfway across the country!), I send him regular care packages to let him know we are thinking about him and to help provide him with things he may need or that might make his life a little more pleasant.

Recently, my son started calling home a lot more. He doesn’t need anything. He just seems eager to share news from school and hear about how things at home are. I realized he is probably feeling a little homesick.

Gift Of Home College Care Package

So, I decided to put together a care package to surround him with things that remind him of home. Essentially, I want to give him the gift of home. I decided I would flood all five of his senses with memories of home.

Gifts For The Five Senses

I burned a CD with our favorite family road trip tunes (hear), included a family picture (see), and a added batch of my homemade cookies (taste). Unfortunately, my son’s favorite dessert, my apple crumble, doesn’t travel well. So I included an Air Wick Life Scents candle that smells JUST LIKE IT.

I wrapped all of these up in one of our super soft throw blankets from the family room (touch) to round out the five senses. I have an image in my head of him sitting on his bunk in the dorm with the blanket across his lap, pictures of us staring back at him, our favorite family tunes playing in the background, and the scent of apple crumble floating through the air as he enjoys one of the cookies.

Hopefully, that will be enough to ease any homesickness he might be feeling. I’m so happy I can send him a little bit of home!

Air Wick Life Scents Multi-Layered Fragrance Candles

I actually received two candles Air Wick Life Scents Multi-Layered Fragrance candles to help me craft this post.

Air Wick Life Scents on a brown table

I sent the Spiced Apple Crumble to my son but kept the Emerald Woodland for our home. It’s the perfect scent for getting the house ready for the holidays! I put mine on the table in our foyer so the scent can fill the entire first floor.

Do you have similar habits or surroundings like the families in the video that make you think of home? I wish I had a green thumb so that our memories included a garden full of fresh flowers!

Instead, I’m going to have to wait for Air Wicks to make a coffee-scented candle since that’s the smell my kids wake up to every morning (in fact, I’m pretty sure they sometimes stay in bed until long after they smell my coffee brewing to make sure I’ve had time to drink it before they risk running into me 🙂 ).

What scents are prevalent in your home? Tell me about them in the comments so I can imagine dropping by for a visit.

  1. I know how important care packages are to our “babies” away at college. I know your son appreciated this care package from home. Only 2 more weeks and our “babies” will be home for Thanksgiving!!
