Why do we put Marshmallows in Hot Chocolate?

Adding marshmallows to hot chocolate is a tradition rooted in enhancing both the flavor and texture of the drink. It’s a simple addition that turns hot chocolate into a warm and comforting experience.

  • Marshmallows are sweet and pair perfectly with the rich, slightly bitter taste of chocolate, balancing the overall flavor of the drink.
  • As marshmallows melt, they create a silky, frothy layer on top of the hot chocolate, making it smoother and more indulgent.
  • Floating marshmallows can act as a gentle insulator, slowing the loss of heat and keeping the drink warm longer.
  • Marshmallows add a playful, comforting element that’s often tied to childhood memories, making hot chocolate feel like a cozy treat.
  • Marshmallows can be flavored, shaped, or toasted, adding a layer of personalization and creativity to your cup.

🥘 Ingredients

There aren’t very many items needed in order to make these marshmallow hearts — in fact, you only need 3 ingredients.

Valentine Hot Cocoa Marshmallow Hearts ingredients are arranged on a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • Heart Shaped Marshmallows: The amount called for in the recipe will make 10 skewers. If you want more just increase the number of marshmallows you buy.

  • Hot Cocoa: Whatever flavor and brand of hot cocoa you like to make will work for this treat.

🔀 Substitutions

If you don’t have the ingredients you need, see if you have these instead:

Heart shaped marshmallows: Substitute with regular marshmallows and cut them into heart shapes using a small cookie cutter.

Chocolate candy melts: Instead, you can melt regular chocolate chips or bars (milk or dark chocolate) with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening to help with the consistency.

🌈 Variations / Options / Add-Ins

Here are a few different ways that you can change up this recipe to make it your own:

  • Different Flavor: If the marshmallows you buy aren’t already a special flavor, try looking for flavored marshmallows for added variety, like strawberry or vanilla.
  • More Color: Opt for colorful candy melts to match the Valentine’s theme, such as pink or red.
  • Toppings: You can add extra toppings like whipped cream, sprinkles, or chocolate shavings to the hot chocolate. For the marshmallows, add sprinkles, edible glitter, or crushed candies on top of the chocolate drizzle before it sets for extra decoration.

🔪 How To Make Valentine Hot Cocoa Marshmallow Hearts

Making this recipe is so easy. It will look like you put in a lot of time and effort, but you won’t have to at all.

Step 1: Line Baking Sheet

Take a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper. This step will help keep the process of making the Valentine marshmallow hearts as mess-free as possible.

Step 2: Put Marshmallows on Skewers

Gently push 2 marshmallow hearts onto a wooden skewer (repeat with all the skewers). Try to do this gently so that the marshmallow hearts don’t lose their shape.

Push the hearts so they are both almost at the end of the skewer. Place the skewered marshmallows on the baking sheet.

Step 3: Trim the Skewers

It is time to trim down the skewers so they are not too long for a mug of hot cocoa. Cut about 2-3 inches off the skewer with the kitchen scissors.

Step 4: Melt the Chocolate

Melt about 5 ounces of the chocolate candy melts in the microwave. Typically it works best to microwave in 30 second intervals.

Stir the chocolate between each interval and stop when the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Step 5: Drizzle Chocolate

When the chocolate is melted allow it to cool for a few moments. Now spoon some into the plastic baggie and snip off one corner.

Drizzle the chocolate across the marshmallow hearts in a zig zag pattern. Allow the marshmallow skewers to sit for a little while so the chocolate can harden.

While the chocolate is setting up it’s a great time to make up a mug of hot cocoa.

Step 6: Serve or Gift

It is time to enjoy the Valentine Hot Cocoa Marshmallow Hearts. Lay each skewer across a mug of hot chocolate for everyone to stir in their drink.

If you would like to gift these delicious marshmallow hearts, just put a skewer into a clear cellophane treat bag and tie it with a pretty ribbon.

I like using the clear bags so that the marshmallows can be seen easily. However, if you prefer you can use Valentine’s Day treat bags.

👩‍🍳 Pro Tips

Here are a few tips to make sure that your heart marshmallows turn out perfectly every time that you make them.

  • If you’re not using heart marshmallows and instead are cutting marshmallows into heart shapes, lightly dust your cookie cutter with powdered sugar or cornstarch before cutting to prevent sticking.
  • Slightly freeze marshmallows before skewering to make them firmer and easier to handle.
  • Lightly grease the tip of the skewer with a tiny bit of butter or coconut oil to prevent marshmallows from tearing.
  • Twisting the skewer while pushing helps insert it smoothly without squishing the marshmallows.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag, dip a fork in melted chocolate and quickly flick it over the marshmallows for an easy drizzle effect.
  • Place decorated marshmallow skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet and chill in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes to help the chocolate set quickly.
