Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Wooden BBQ skewers
  • Kitchen scissors
  • Small sandwich bag

Ingredients

  • 20 heart shaped marshmallows
  • 10 ounces Wilton chocolate candy melts

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Gently push 2 marshmallows onto each BBQ skewer. Push the hearts so they are both almost at the end of the skewer. Place the skewered marshmallows on the baking sheet.

  • Use the kitchen scissors to trim down the BBQ skewer 2-3 inches.
  • Pour 5 ounces of the candy melts into a microwave safe dish. Heat in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring occasionally until melted.

  • Let the melted chocolate cool a few minutes and spoon into the small sandwich baggy. Snip one corner of the sandwich baggy and gently squeeze the melted chocolate over the marshmallows in a zig-zag pattern. Allow the marshmallow skewers to sit for a little while so the chocolate can harden.
  • Lay each skewer across a mug of hot chocolate for everyone to stir in their drink. You can also gift these by putting them in a treat bag and tying with a ribbon.

Notes

Pro Tips

  • If you’re not using heart marshmallows and instead are cutting marshmallows into heart shapes, lightly dust your cookie cutter with powdered sugar or cornstarch before cutting to prevent sticking.
  • Slightly freeze marshmallows before skewering to make them firmer and easier to handle.
  • Lightly grease the tip of the skewer with a tiny bit of butter or coconut oil to prevent marshmallows from tearing.
  • Twisting the skewer while pushing helps insert it smoothly without squishing the marshmallows.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag, dip a fork in melted chocolate and quickly flick it over the marshmallows for an easy drizzle effect.
  • Place decorated marshmallow skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet and chill in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes to help the chocolate set quickly.

Recipe FAQs

How can I store these marshmallows?
Store finished marshmallow stirrers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.

How do I keep the melted chocolate from hardening too fast?
Melt the chocolate right before decorating, and if it starts to harden, microwave it for 5-10 seconds to re-melt it and Add a teaspoon of coconut oil to keep it smooth.

Can I make these dairy-free or vegan?
Yes! Use vegan marshmallows, dairy-free chocolate and paper straws instead of wooden skewers for a fully plant-based option.
