These Snowman Nutter Butter Cookies are such a fun snack for kids that are easy to make and fun to decorate.

The cookies are perfect for those of us who try to be a “Pinterest mom” but tend to fail more often than we’d like to admit LOL. Just be careful of those teenage boys who like to eat a lot, like mine — they’ll have these gone before you know it.
At least these cookies are super easy to make and decorate, in case your first batch disappears quickly. If your family loves fun Christmas cookies, try these Christmas cake mix cookies too.
Besides serving these treats at your Christmas event, they also make a great snack for winter-themed baby showers, birthday parties, or just a fun snack for the kids.

What are Nutter Butter Cookies?
Nutter Butter cookies are very popular in the U.S., but for those of you who do not know what they are — they are essentially peanut butter sandwich cookies shaped like a peanut with a crunchy texture, and a creamy filling. Kids LOVE them, and even adults think they’re pretty tasty.
Nutter Butter cookie ingredients even consist of REAL peanut butter – can we say THANK YOU?! They might not be super healthy, but hey, at least you get the real thing.
Where can you buy Nutter Butter cookies?
If you’re located in the U.S., Nutter Butter cookies can be found all over the place — grocery stores, gas stations, etc. However, you can also find them online on Amazon as well as other places too.

❤️ Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Snowman Nutter Butter cookies will become one of your kids’ favorite snacks to make during Christmas:
- Easy to make: Since you don’t have to bake the cookies, you just decorate them, they’re really easy to make.
- Fun to decorate: Your kids will have so much fun squeezing the icing over the cookies and letting it run over the sides and then adding all of the details to make the cookies look like snowmen.
- Looks cute on a plate: I don’t know what it is about snowmen, but they just look so cute — especially snowmen cookies decorated by your children.
If you and your kids love making snowmen together, you may also enjoy this easy to make juice box snowman.
🥘 Ingredients
To decorate these snowman Nutter Butter cookies, you’ll need these four simple ingredients.
- Nutter Butter cookies: The cute shape of these cookies is perfect for decorating as snowmen.
- Cookie icing: You’ll need white for the snowman’s body and red or green for the scarf.
- Sparkle gel: This white gel adds a shiny, textured finish to the snowman cookies, giving them a glistening, icy effect.
- Snowman cookie ball decorations: Use these for the eyes, nose and buttons on the snowman.

🔀 Substitutions
If you don’t have the ingredients you need, see if you have these instead:
Nutter Butter cookies: If you don’t have these cookies, you can use the flat Milano cookies, like the dark chocolate or mint, because they are a similar shape.
Cookie icing: For the white, you can use melted white chocolate or candy melts. For the red and green, you can mix food coloring with white royal icing.
Sparkle gel: Edible shimmer spray; or glitter dust or sanding sugar sprinkled on wet icing can work instead.
Snowman cookie ball decorations: In case you can’t find these, you can use candy eyes or icing dots for eyes, orange jimmies or candy slivers for the nose, and mini M&Ms for buttons.
🥄 Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools
You only need three kitchen tools to help you make these holiday cookies. You might already have all of these tools on hand in your kitchen, but if not, they’re easy to find.
- Wax paper: The snowmen will be made on wax paper to keep your counters clean. You’ll need to move the cookies to a clean sheet of paper at least 3 or 4 times during this process.
- Spatula: You’ll use this to help you move the treats to a clean sheet of wax paper every time.
- Serving plate: It’s always fun to break out the Christmas dishes for serving food at this time of year.
🔪 How to Make Snowman Nutter Butter Cookies
These cookies are so easy to make, so gather your kids and have fun making memories — and cookies together.
Step 1: Put Cookies on Wax Paper
To get started, lay down wax paper on your kitchen counter (or a cookie sheet) and place the Nutter Butter cookies about an inch apart.

Step 2: Put Icing on the Cookies
Squeeze the white icing on the top of the cookies and let it run down the sides. Add more icing to the top edge and let it run down the sides as well.

Step 3: Start Decorating the Snowman Cookies
Next, apply the snowman cookie ball decorations by positioning the eyes, nose, and buttons as you see below.

Step 4: Move the Cookies
Then, lift up the cookies using a spatula just before the icing is completely dry and move them to a clean sheet of wax paper. Continue doing this until there is no more icing pooling on the wax paper and let the icing dry completely before moving onto the next step.
Step 5: Add the Scarf
Once the icing is dry, use the red or green icing to make a scarf around the snowman’s neck.

Step 6: Move the Cookies Again
Lift up the cookies using a spatula to move to a clean sheet of wax paper just as the icing is drying, as done in a previous step.
Step 7: Add Sparkle Gel
Lastly, add some of the sparkle gel to the bottom of the cookies and spread it around with a butter knife so it spills over the edge.
Step 8: Allow to set, Then Serve
Allow the icing to dry overnight and then serve. Enjoy!

👩🍳 Pro Tips
Here are a few tips for this Christmas recipe to help make your experience even better.
- Icing hardens as it dries, so press on eyes, nose and buttons while the icing is still wet so they adhere well.
- Let the base icing dry slightly before moving cookies to a new wax paper sheet. This prevents a messy transfer.
- Let the decorated cookies dry for at least 6–8 hours (or overnight) to ensure the icing and sparkle gel set completely.
- Place the cookies on a wire rack once dry to make sure the bottom of the cookies aren’t sticky.
❓ Recipe FAQs
Absolutely! These cookies can be made up to a week in advance if stored properly.
Once the cookies are dry, store them in an airtight container with layers separated by wax paper to prevent sticking. Keep the cookies in a cool, dry place to preserve their decoration.
Yes! Freeze them in a single layer on a tray first, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container. Thaw at room temperature to prevent smudging.
