Fun at Home Kits for Kids

It is generally cold during the holiday season and you’re probably like me, always looking for new ways to keep the kids entertained inside while still keeping their minds active

Worksheets like this printable Christmas maze for kids and free printable coloring pages are enjoyable and great to fold up and put in a holiday card for relatives.

Sometimes I like to surprise the kids with more in-depth activity kits that they can work on together or we will even sit down and do them as a family.

Here are some fun options:

  • Kraftic has some really fun woodworking building sets — most sets have the pieces to build three different projects so they work perfectly for families with multiple children. Girls and boys alike love building quality wood items like tractors, Jeeps, flatbeds, airplanes, race cars, etc.
  • If you love getting your kids excited about STEM learning these building toy kits are an easy way for kids to develop a love for imagination and science.
  • Sometimes your kids might be feeling artsy so a dinosaur painting kit would be fun for them to do. My kids love to paint their own dinosaurs and set up their own Jurassic Park scene.
  • Kids 7 and up will get a kick out of secret decoder kits. Such a fun way to spend an unplugged afternoon.
  • National Geographic has some fun science kits that have over 15 scientific experiments and activities to keep your children busy for hours.
  • Maybe you’re like me and you love to get retro sometimes and do a project that takes you back to childhood. Shrinky Dinks were popular when I was little and the first time I showed this craft project to my kids they were hooked — there are tons of shrinky dink kits now that also include supplies to make all sorts of items with the shrinky you create.

Creative Ways to Use This Printable

There are many ways to get creative with the maze for your class or at home. Here are some ideas that the kids can do once they finish the printable:

Build Their own Maze

The kids can use Legos, building blocks, cardboard boxes (let kids use their imagination), etc. to build their own maze. Then, depending on the size of the maze, other kids can either walk through it and try to get to the other side or maneuver toys through it.

Write a Story

Have the kids flip the paper over and write a story on the back about the elf and the presents. This combines storytelling skills with imagination and helps them practice writing.

Draw Their own Maze

Encourage kids to create their own Christmas-themed maze on a blank sheet of paper or on the back of this maze for others to solve. This activity boosts creativity and spatial awareness as they think about different routes and obstacles to include in their maze.

Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools for Printables

Printer: This one is a great budget printer. If you’re willing to spend just a little more though, this is a better option. And if you’re looking for an all-in-one home office machine, this one does it all, has high reviews and includes 2 years of ink.

Ink cartridges: Speaking of ink, this is where the cost of using printables can really add up! To save BIG on ink, buy it from CompAndSave.com. It’s substantially cheaper than anywhere else and they carry ink for all major printer brands and models.

Printer paper or cardstock: If you’re printing for one-time, quick use, print on regular printer paper. If you need the printout to hold up to being handled often or if you plan to laminate it to use it multiple times, choose cardstock.

Laminator: Laminating your printable is an inexpensive way to use it multiple times. Just use dry erase markers and wipe off when you’re done so you can use it again!  Alternately, you can cover the printable with clear contact paper to achieve the same thing or place the printable in clear page protectors.

Binder or Folder: If you’re using page protectors for your printables, binders are such an easy way to keep them together and organized. I love this colorful set. If you prefer to stick with standard white though, this set is highly rated and very affordable. And if you need larger binders, this set is terrific. If you go with folders, I like these.

Storage boxes: I like to keep a collection of coloring pages and activity sheets for kids in these plastic storage boxes that I pull out whenever I need to keep kids occupied.

Hole punch: If you don’t use page protectors but want to use binders to organize your printables, a hole puncher will be your best friend. This is the one you want if you’ll be punching holes in several pages at a time and want to do so easily. And this bargain option is ideal if you don’t mind limiting your hole punching to 2-3 pages at a time.

Clipboard: I love this clipboard for on-the-go with the kids. It has built in storage for both printables and markers or pencils.
