You only need a few simple ingredients to make this recipe. All of these ingredients can be found in your pantry or your local grocery store. A farmers market is a great place to look for fresh chilies.

Hatch Chilies – Hatch Chilies can be found in the produce section of your local grocery store. Fresh chilies really work best for this recipe.

Butter – I used salted butter for this recipe. You can use unsalted if you don’t have salted butter on hand.

Substitutions

Chilies: If you don’t have chilies or you can’t find them at your local store, you can use jalapeno peppers instead.

Cheese: Shredded Cheddar Cheese works best, however you could also use pepper jack, Colby jack, or even Mexican blend cheese.

Variations / Options / Add-Ins

Here are a few ideas to change up this recipe.

Onion: Add some diced onion for a bit of sweetness and crunch.

How to Make Air Fryer Biscuits

Making this biscuits recipe is so simple. Just follow the instructions below and you will have a fluffy cheesy batch of biscuits in no time at all.

Step 1: Prepare the chili pepper

Prepare the chili by removing the seeds and veins from the inside. Dice into very small pieces. Make sure to wash your hands with dish soap following the handling of peppers. Do not touch your eyes.

Step 3: Add the grated butter to the flour mixture

Using a cheese grater, shred the butter into the flour mixture. You can use a more traditional method with a pastry mixer.

The grated butter is added to the flour mixture.

Step 4: Gently mix in the butter

Using your hands, incorporate the butter and flour mixture. You will want the butter coated in flour in small pea size bits.

Slowly add the milk and continue to mix with your hand. This will be messy and sticky.

Step 6: Stir in shredded cheese

Add 1 cup of shredded cheese and mix.

Step 7: Cut out the biscuits

On a flat dry surface, flatten the biscuit dough until 1” thick. I use a wide-mouth mason jar to cut the biscuits out of the dough. After the biscuits are cut, re-form and flatten the remaining dough for cutting until all the dough is used.

Step 8: Air fry the biscuits

Place biscuits in the air fryer basket on parchment paper. Sprinkle biscuits with remaining cheese. Cook at 400°F for 8-10 minutes until biscuits are slightly golden.

Serving Suggestions

I like to serve these biscuits with Cajun Chicken Pasta or Instant Pot Pasta Fagioli. Both of these are easy meals that taste amazing with a cheddar biscuit.

Pro Tips

Here are a few tips that you can use to make this easy recipe.

  • Be careful to not overmix your biscuit batter. Overmixing will cause you to have tough biscuits.
  •  Do not press too hard when cutting out the biscuits. This will cause them to be tough as well. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake these in a 400°F oven on a parchment paper lined baking sheet for 10-12 minutes.
  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for the best flavor.
  • I like to use freshly shredded cheese because it melts the best in this recipe.
  • Instead of grating the butter, you can also cut butter in with a pastry cutter.
  • I like to line my air fryer basket with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Once your biscuits are golden brown remove them from the air fryer and brush the tops with melted butter.
  • Do not use room-temperature butter for your biscuits, you need to use cold butter.
  • For oven style air fryers cook the biscuits on the middle rack, on the baking sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.
