I love sending notes in my children’s lunch boxes. It is a simple way to show my kids I am thinking about them and love them—parenting doesn’t always have to be complex.

Holidays make lunch box notes extra fun. It is easy to bring the current holiday into the lunch box with themed notes, like these Easter lunchbox notes I have for the next upcoming holiday.

Explaining St. Patrick’s Day to Kids

A lot of children don’t know anything about St. Patrick’s day other than the tradition to wear green one day each year.

If you’re like me, I like to try and educate my kids on the significance of different holidays and why people celebrate.

Here is some information to share with kids about the meaning of St. Patrick’s Day:

  • Saint Patrick was actually born in Britain and was sent to work in Ireland when he was 16.
  • March 17th is designated as St. Patrick’s Day because that’s the day that Saint Patrick supposedly died.
  • There are many legends about Saint Patrick—like the one involving the four-leaf clover as good luck. The legend is that he used a shamrock, which is actually a three-leaf clover, to explain the Trinity in his religious teachings.
  • The shamrock is the national symbol of Ireland, so that’s part of why green is associated with this day.
  • The other reason we wear green is because according to folklore, wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, and they like to pinch anyone they can see. So, if you’re wearing green, the leprechauns can’t see you and you can’t get pinched.
  • St. Patrick’s Day started out as a religious celebration and turned into a celebration of Irish culture. As Irish emigrants came to the U.S., they transformed St. Patrick’s day into a mostly secular holiday focused on all things Irish.
  • The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in Boston in 1737.
  • Corned beef and cabbage are common foods eaten by Irish-Americans on St. Patrick’s Day.

What Kids can Wear on St. Patrick’s Day

I always regret not planning ahead and making sure my kids have something to wear to school on St. Patrick’s Day. You definitely don’t want to be the one kid who isn’t wearing some green!

One year I bought some shamrock temporary tattoos and the package has lasted me for several years. It is a great last-minute solution if my child doesn’t have a green shirt to wear.

Special green socks are fun to wear on this Irish holiday. Another easy idea is to buy a pack of St. Patrick’s Day party favors and the whole family will be set with silly necklaces, bracelets, sunglasses and more.

One of our favorite accessories to wear on this holiday is green LED light up bracelets. Be sure to send extras with your kids because their friends will all want one too.

Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools for Printables

Printer: This one is a great budget printer. If you’re willing to spend just a little more though, this is a better option. And if you’re looking for an all-in-one home office machine, this one does it all, has high reviews and includes 2 years of ink.

Ink cartridges: Speaking of ink, this is where the cost of using printables can really add up! To save BIG on ink, buy it from CompAndSave.com. It’s substantially cheaper than anywhere else and they carry ink for all major printer brands and models.

Printer paper or cardstock: If you’re printing for one-time, quick use, print on regular printer paper. If you need the printout to hold up to being handled often, choose cardstock.

Cutter: If you want nice, clean cuts, a paper cutter is a must-have. This is a great one if you plan on using it a lot. But this one is totally sufficient if you want something solid and reliable for occasional use.

On a tight budget? Go with this one. Or, use a good pair of scissors and a sturdy ruler.

Binder or Folder: If you’re using page protectors for your printables, binders are such an easy way to keep them together and organized. I love this colorful set. If you prefer to stick with standard white though, this set is highly rated and very affordable. And if you need larger binders, this set is terrific. If you go with folders, I like these.

Sticker paper: Instead of cards, you could print these as stickers! You just need sticker paper.
