These Elf on the Shelf Printable Props will make creating new elf scenes each night a breeze. Finding shortcuts and ways to make Elf on the Shelf easy and fun makes life easier for parents!
What is Elf on the Shelf?
Elf on the Shelf has been around since 2004 and has gained an enormous amount of popularity across the US. You buy a “kit” that includes the children’s book and the elf. Some of the fun is choosing one from the many adorable possible Elf on the Shelf Names.
The elf visits children between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve and reports back to Santa whether the children have been naughty or nice. The elf plays a game of hide and seek with the family throughout the month of December and moves during the night. The children have to find the elf each morning, but they cannot touch the elf!
Elf on the Shelf has gotten to be a VERY big part of the Christmas season for many families. Children look forward to the elfโs visit and get up each morning anxious to see where he/she has been up to overnight.
Many parents have adopted a mischievous type of personality for their little elf. They will set the elf up overnight and show him getting into all kinds of trouble. Other families simply hide the elf overnight and the children will search to find him.
Elf on the Shelf adds a little magic to the season, which is probably why it’s become such a popular holiday tradition.
Alternatives to Elf on the Shelf
The past few years have seen an increase in alternatives to Elf on the Shelf. Many of these other ideas have a similar concept and these printable props would work for the alternatives too!
Here are some alternatives I have seen used:
- The Kindness Elves are one of my favorite alternatives since they encourage kids to practice kindness rather than promote mischief.
- Reindeer In Here is an easy option that doesn’t require much effort from parents, but younger children love it.
- Shepherd on the Search is a Christian themed idea that focuses on the true meaning of Christmas in a way that engages children.
- Mini Elf on the Shelf is a tiny version of the elf and is much harder for kids to find.
- North Pole Ninjas help Santa with critical missions throughout December.
- Mensch on a Bench is perfect for families that celebrate Hanukkah.
