It’s a practical, useful gift that is so easy to put together with one of the free printable teacher gift tags. It can be given to start off their school year or during Teacher Appreciation Week.
One of the tags says, “It’s Going to be a Bright School Year With You as My Teacher” and the other tag says, “It’s Been a Bright School Year With You as My Teacher.”

Easy Ways to Start off the School Year Right
If you’re giving this gift at the beginning of the school year, I have some tips for you to help make the school year go a little more smoothly.
I know as a mother, I am always a little anxious before each new school year—I worry about how my kids will get along with new teachers and if the year will go smoothly. Having a large family, I have been through the whole beginning of the school year anxiety MANY times and have finally conquered it with these easy steps.
- Attend any back to school functions the school offers so you can meet the teacher and staff before the first day.
- Don’t forget about meeting the fine arts teachers because your child will be seeing these people regularly and we need to connect with them too.
- Prepare your child in advance for any major changes being in a new grade might bring. This can really help everyone have an easier transition.
- Go to the school beforehand and practice things like how to open a locker if that is something new. If you can’t go to school and do this with your child, at home you can practice opening a lock together instead.
- Send all the needed supplies with your child if at all possible. This lightens the teacher’s load.
- Give the teacher a back to school gift, like this highlighter gift, to ease the transition and show that you recognize how important teachers really are in your life.
Creative Ways to Use This Printable
A highlighter teacher’s gift is such a useful and thoughtful gesture. Here are some creative ways to use it:
- Arrange the highlighters like a bouquet using floral foam, tissue paper, and a mason jar or small tin. Stick the printable tag to a skewer or straw and place it in the bouquet like a “sign.”
- Fill a cute clear pencil pouch or zip bag with highlighters (with the tag on them) and maybe add some extras like sticky notes or pens.
- Using a mini metal pail, plastic cup, or even a reusable tumbler, stand the highlighters upright inside and tie the tag with ribbon around the cup or handle.
- Line up highlighters in a rainbow color order and secure them with the tag and a colorful ribbon.
- Turn your tag into a laminated bookmark and attach a single bright highlighter with washi tape or ribbon.

Materials Needed
This simple gift idea is definitely one that teachers can use because they always need highlighters. It only takes a few supplies to pull these practical gifts together.

- Printable Gift Tags: You can get these tags by filling in the form below. Use whichever tag you want—depending on if it’s the beginning of the school year or near the end.
- Highlighters: You can use any color or size that you want and any number of highlighters since you just tape the tag on them.
- Tape: Use clear tap to secure the highlighters together and also to attach the tag on them.
- Ribbon: The ribbon needs to fit through the hole in the gift tag, so it should be 1/8 inch wide. I used light blue ribbon, but you can always just use whatever ribbon you already have.
Equipment Needed / Helpful Tools for Printables
Printer: This one is a great budget printer. If you’re willing to spend just a little more though, this is a better option. And if you’re looking for an all-in-one home office machine, this one does it all, has high reviews and includes 2 years of ink.
Ink cartridges: Speaking of ink, this is where the cost of using printables can really add up! To save BIG on ink, buy it from CompAndSave.com. It’s substantially cheaper than anywhere else and they carry ink for all major printer brands and models.
Printer paper or cardstock: Since you’re using this as a gift tag, you want it be sturdy so it’s best to choose cardstock.
Laminator: Laminating your printable is an inexpensive way to turn it into a bookmark as suggested in the creative ways up above. Alternately, you can cover the printable with clear contact paper to achieve the same thing.
Cutter: If you want nice, clean cuts, a paper cutter is a must-have. This is a great one if you plan on using it a lot. But this one is totally sufficient if you want something solid and reliable for occasional use.
On a tight budget? Go with this one. Or, use a good pair of scissors and a sturdy ruler.
Binder or Folder: If you’re using page protectors for your printables, binders are such an easy way to keep them together and organized. I love this colorful set. If you prefer to stick with standard white though, this set is highly rated and very affordable. And if you need larger binders, this set is terrific. If you go with folders, I like these.
Hole Punch: A hole punch with a soft grip handle is nice to have, especially if you’re making several of these or if your kids are helping punch the holes.
How to Make a Highlighter Teacher Gift
Kids can definitely help you make these highlighter teacher gifts. If your child is giving a gift, it’s nice to make sure they are as involved as possible.
Step 1: Print the Gift Tags
Start this DIY project off by printing out the teacher gift tags. Print the tags that correspond with where your child is in the school year—either the beginning or the end of the school year.

Decide how many teacher gifts you need to give based on how many teachers your child will have/did have this year, and print off the appropriate number of gift tags.
I like to print mine on white cardstock for a professional look and so they’re sturdy.
Simply fill in the form below to print the gift tags for free.
Step 2: Cut out the tags
Once you have the tags printed, use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut them out around the outer border.
Step 3: Punch Holes
Use your single hole punch to punch two holes in the middle of the top of each gift tag.
Step 4: Secure the Highlighters
Lay the highlighters out flat and then secure them with some clear tape.

Step 5: Thread Ribbon
Thread ribbon through the holes on the top of the gift tag and tie the ribbon in a pretty bow.
Step 6: Attach the tag
Tape the gift tag to the top of the highlighters to finish off the gift.

Repeat these steps depending on how many highlighter teacher gifts you are making.
