It turns out, I'm not as good at following my own rules as I thought.

Like most parents, I keep an eye on my kids' screen time. I set limits, encourage breaks, and remind them that too much time on devices isn't good for their brains.
But then I had a thought: What if I tracked my own screen time the same way?
I wasn't prepared for what I found.
The Plan: Tracking My Own Screen Time for a Week
For one full week, I monitored my screen time just like I do for my kids-no excuses. I used my phone's built-in screen time tracker and wrote down how much time I spent on different apps each day.
✔ Social media
✔ Texting and emails
✔ Streaming shows and videos
✔ Mindless scrolling
I also tracked the times I grabbed my phone out of habit-without a real reason.
The result: Let's just say, I had some eye-opening moments.
What I Learned (And Why It Surprised Me)
I expected to find a few bad habits, but I wasn't prepared for just how much time I was actually spending on my screen. What started as a simple experiment quickly turned into a wake-up call about my daily routines.
1. My “Quick Checks” Add Up-A Lot
What I thought:
- "I don't spend that much time on my phone."
- "I just check messages and hop off."
What I learned:
- Every quick glance at my phone turned into several minutes.
- I was picking up my phone dozens of times a day-sometimes for no reason.

The result: Over the course of a week, those "quick checks" added up to several hours of lost time.
2. Social Media Is My Biggest Time Trap
What I thought:
- "I use social media mostly for work."
- "I don't scroll as much as I used to."
What I learned:
- Once I opened an app, I got sucked in for way longer than planned.
- Scrolling was the #1 way I lost time without realizing it.

The result: Just a 10-minute scroll here and there added up to multiple hours by the end of the week.
3. I Was Ignoring My Own Rules
What I thought:
- "I'm pretty balanced when it comes to screen time."
- "I take breaks just like I tell my kids to."
What I learned:
- I was way more lenient with myself than I am with my kids.
- I tell them to take breaks, but I barely took any myself.

The result: I realized I needed the same limits I set for them.
4. My Sleep Was Suffering More Than I Thought
What I thought:
- "I only use my phone a little before bed."
- "I sleep fine."
What I learned:
- 30 minutes of 'winding down' on my phone turned into an hour (or more).
- My sleep quality was noticeably worse on nights I used my phone right before bed.

The result: I started sleeping better as soon as I cut back on nighttime screen time.
5. I Had More Free Time Than I Realized
What I thought:
- "I don't have time for hobbies."
- "I'm always too busy."
What I learned:
- I had plenty of free time-I was just spending it on screens.
- Cutting back gave me time for things I always say I don't have time for.

The result: I read more, got outside more, and felt less rushed every day.
The Small Changes That Made a Big Difference
After seeing my screen time habits, I knew I needed to make some changes. But instead of cutting everything at once, I focused on simple swaps that actually stuck.
- I set app limits. Just like I do for my kids.
- I started plugging in my phone at night-outside my bedroom.
- I replaced scrolling with a book or podcast.
- I moved my most distracting apps off my home screen.
- I asked myself: “Do I really need to pick up my phone right now?”
The result: I didn't cut out screens completely-but I used them with more intention.
Would I Do This Again?
Absolutely.
Tracking my screen time was uncomfortable at first, but it made me more aware of how I spend my time. Now, I'm more mindful about my habits, and I feel more present with my family.
