While I was applying a thick layer of mascara the other day, I thought it would be nice if I could figure out how to grow long eyelashes. I’m the only one in my family with short, thin lashes so clearly I missed a memo the rest of them got.
I’ve always wanted long, thick eyelashes. I’d love to wake up looking exotic. Heck, I’d settle for being able to weather a rain storm without a river of mascara running down my face.
I used to think beautiful eyelashes were something you were simply born with (or, in my case, born without). It turns out that you aren’t condemned to short, stubby lashes if you don’t want to be. I can’t wait to get these little lashes growing!
There are several ways to get dramatic lashes without resorting to false lashes or layers of mascara. Here are some tips on how to grow long eyelashes.
How to Grow Long Eyelashes
Change is a long process. Below you’ll find some of the most effective ways to grow long lashes.
I’ve started with the solutions that will take the longest to achieve long, thick lashes. If you want immediate results, scroll to the bottom to find the quickest solution.
Take Your Vitamins
Many nutrients have been shown to promote hair growth. Since your eyelashes are tiny hairs, the same foods that contribute to long, healthy tresses help you grow long, thick eyelashes.
The best vitamins and nutrients for hair (and lashes) are:
- Omega-3s – fish, nuts, flax seeds, avocado
- Vitamin C – citrus fruits, red peppers, broccoli, strawberries
- Biotin – eggs, peanuts, wheat bran, cheese
- Iron – meat, seafood, beans, dark leafy greens
- Zinc – shellfish, meats, beans, whole grains
- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) – sunflower seeds, garlic, soybeans, yogurt
You can buy supplements to get these nutrients. However, as you can see, many of them are included in a healthy diet. So, simply eating well-balanced, nutrient-dense meals will nourish your lashes as well as your body.
Apply Oil at Bedtime
I tried this exactly once but couldn’t stand how it felt. However, lots of people swear by this technique. Before bed, dip a Q-tip in olive oil and apply it to your lashes like you’re putting on mascara. Wash it off with warm water the next morning.
I mentioned olive oil because that’s what I tried it with. Other oils that my friends have used instead are:
- Castor oil
- Coconut oil
- Vitamin E oil
Treat Your Lashes Right
Many of the things we do to create the illusion of long, thick lashes actually sabotage our efforts. Wearing mascara and using eyelash curlers can damage our lashes.
Most mascara, especially waterproof mascara, dries out your lashes, making them brittle and more likely to break. Don’t worry, if you’re like me and aren’t ready to part with mascara, there’s a great one listed farther down that won’t dry out your lashes.
Then, we have to rub hard at our lashes to remove our makeup at the end of the day, resulting in damaging them further. Likewise, eyelash curlers pull on our lashes, increasing the chances individual lashes will fall out.
Eyelid Massage
That doesn’t mean that we should have a hands-off policy when it comes to treating our lashes with care. On the contrary, an occasional massage can help stimulate growth.
To massage your lash line, start with clean hands. Then, use your ring finger to gently rub along the lash lines on each of your eyes, taking care to avoid tugging at lashes.
Brushing
Just like brushing the hair on our heads stimulates circulation to enhance hair growth, brushing our eyelashes can help them to grow too. Simply use an eyelash comb and gently brush your lashes from the roots to the tips for a few minutes each day.
Use the Right Eye Makeup
While the tips above will help you grow longer, thicker eyelashes, they all take time. That’s why I haven’t abandoned my eye makeup.
The good news is that some eye makeup actually helps eyelashes grow thicker and longer!
Use an Eyelash Primer
One of the BEST things you can do for your lashes is to use a primer on your lashes. My favorites is GrandePRIMER.
GrandePRIMER is a white pre-mascara primer that helps thicken and lengthen lashes. It’s infused with nutrients and peptides to nourish your lashes. And unlike rubbing oil on your lashes, you won’t have greasy eyes so you can pamper your eyelashes all day!
The microfibers in GrandePRIMER don’t flake and they instantly add volume and length to your lashes. And to help you avoid damaging eyelash curlers, this magical wand also curls your lashes as you apply it.
That means you can enjoy the look of longer, thicker eyelashes at the same time your natural lashes are getting stronger and fuller. BTW, Grande Cosmetics accomplished all this without parabens.
Use a Conditioning Mascara
Remember earlier when I told you that I’d have a mascara recommendation for you? Well, this here it is.
GrandeMASCARA is a conditioning mascara so it doesn’t dry out your lashes the same way other mascaras do. Loaded with many of the same peptides as the GrandePRIMER, it also contains panthenols and natural waxes to protect your lashes while it nourishes them.
The natural waxes in GrandeMASCARA accomplish the amazing task of making it not only water resistant but also easy to remove! If you’ve ever scrubbed at your lashes to remove waterproof mascara, you can appreciate what a small miracle that is.
Like GrandePRIMER, GrandeMASCARA does not contain parabens. And unlike many other mascaras, it is also free from sulfates and phthalates.
Immediate Results
It will take time for your eyelashes to grow and thicken, but in a matter of minutes you can transform your lashes from this:
