I'll admit it-my family spends a lot of time on screens.

Between work, school, video games, and social media, it sometimes feels like we're all in separate worlds, even when we're in the same room.

So, I decided to try a no-screens weekend. No TV, no tablets, no phones (except for emergencies). Just real-life connection-for 48 hours.

Here's what happened.

The Rules: 48 Hours Without Screens

For an entire weekend, we committed to:

  • No phones, tablets, or TV (except for absolute emergencies).
  • No video games, social media, or YouTube.
  • Only using our devices for calls, music, or essential tasks.

The result: We had no idea what to expect-but the experiment surprised all of us.

What Happened (And Why It Wasn't What I Expected)

I assumed we'd struggle for a while but eventually find other things to do. What I didn't expect was just how much screens had been filling the gaps in our day-and how different our time together would feel without them.

1. The First Few Hours Were Painful

What I expected:

  • The kids would immediately complain.
  • I'd feel itchy to check my phone.

What actually happened:

  • The first couple of hours were full of withdrawal symptoms.
  • We kept reaching for devices out of habit.

The result: We realized how much we rely on screens-even when we don't need them.

2. We Got Bored (And That Was a Good Thing)

What I expected:

  • We'd struggle to fill the time.
  • The kids would constantly ask what to do.

What actually happened:

  • Boredom kicked in… but then creativity followed.
  • The kids built a fort, played board games, and invented their own fun.

The result: Without screens, we naturally found better ways to entertain ourselves.

3. We Had Actual, Uninterrupted Conversations

What I expected:

  • Family time might feel forced or awkward.
  • We'd struggle to fill the silence.

What actually happened:

The result: We weren't just in the same room-we were actually present.

4. Time Slowed Down (In a Good Way)

What I expected:

  • The weekend would drag without screens.
  • I'd be checking the clock constantly.

What actually happened:

  • Without the constant pull of devices, the days felt longer-but in a good way.
  • We fully experienced meals, conversations, and activities without rushing.

The result: Life felt less chaotic and more intentional.

5. We All Slept Better

What I expected:

  • Screen-free time might not affect our sleep.
  • The kids would still fight bedtime.

What actually happened:

  • Without screens before bed, everyone fell asleep faster.
  • We all woke up feeling more rested.

The result: Cutting screens actually improved our sleep-without changing anything else.

Would We Do It Again? Absolutely.

I won't lie-going 48 hours without screens was tough at first. But by the end, we felt more connected, present, and even more rested.

  • We talked more.
  • We played more.
  • We felt like a real team.

Would we do this every weekend? Probably not. But we will be more mindful about our screen time-and plan more unplugged weekends in the future.

Would you ever try a no-screens weekend? Drop a comment-I'd love to hear your thoughts!
