Pro Tips

  • Add a crumbly topping. After you sprinkle the cake mix on top of the cherry pie filling, mix together ¼ cup sugar and ¼ cup brown sugar. Sprinkle this mixture over the cake mix before baking for a delicious crunchy topping.
  • Try to get the butter to cover as much of the cake mix as possible, so that it browns nicely on the top and forms a nice crust.
  • Grease or spray your baking dish well so that the cobbler comes out cleanly every time that you make it.
  • You could use melted chocolate chips to add a little melted chocolate drizzle to the top of the cake if you want to make this cake extra fancy.
  • If you are not using canned pie filling, you can use fresh cherries to make your own pie filling, just make sure that you use pitted cherries for this recipe. I prefer to use dark sweet cherries.
  • If you don’t have a glass or ceramic baking dish on hand, you can use a dutch oven instead
  • I like to melt the butter in a measuring cup, in the microwave. It’s just so easy that way.
