Equipment

  • Blender
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cantaloupe chopped
  • 1 banana frozen
  • 1 ½ - 2 cups packed kale
  • ½ cup milk of choice

Instructions

  • Add chopped cantaloupe to the blender.
    1 cup cantaloupe
  • Break up the banana into pieces that will fit in your blender and add them to the blender.
    1 banana
  • Lightly pack the kale down (don’t squash it super tightly, just press it down gently) into the cup to get a more accurate amount and make sure your smoothie has enough greens for that extra nutrient boost. Then, dump it into your blender.
    1 ½ - 2 cups packed kale
  • Measure ½ cup of milk and pour it into the blender.
    ½ cup milk of choice
  • Put on the lid (I know this is obvious, but if you’ve ever forgot this before, you’ll know why I’m reminding you) and blend for about 2 minutes. You’ll know your smoothie is ready when the texture is completely smooth and creamy, with no visible chunks or leafy bits.
  • I highly recommended adding a cantaloupe slice to the rim of the glass (you probably have some leftover anyway). It literally takes a few extra seconds and you win major style points with the family.

Notes

Pro Tips

  • If you buy an underripe cantaloupe, you can leave it on the counter at room temperature for a couple of days to ripen. Once it’s ripe, store it in the fridge to keep it from spoiling.
  • If you have ripe bananas on your counter, peel and slice them, then freeze them in a bag or container so they’re always ready for smoothies!
  • Store kale unwashed in a plastic bag with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture. It will stay fresh in the fridge for about 5–7 days.
  • If you add more ingredients to your smoothie, you may need to adjust the liquid (milk) to keep the smoothie blendable and creamy.
  • If you’re using a lower-powered blender, you may need to stop once or twice to scrape down the sides and blend again to make sure everything is fully incorporated.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time?
Yes! You can blend it and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day. Give it a good shake or stir before drinking, as it may separate.

Do I need to remove the kale stems?
It depends on your blender. If you have a high-speed blender, it can usually handle the stems. Otherwise, it’s best to remove them to avoid a tough texture.

Can I use frozen cantaloupe?
Yes! Frozen cantaloupe works great and will make the smoothie even colder and thicker. Then, if you don’t have a frozen banana, it will be fine to just use one from the counter.
