Equipment

  • 9x12 or 8x8 casserole

Ingredients

  • 24 ounces Cherry Pie Filling
  • 15.25 ounces Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1/2 cup Melted Butter or more to personal preference

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Grease a 9" x 12" or 8" x 8" casserole dish.
  • Pour the cherry pie filling into the casserole dish.
  • Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the cherry pie filling.
  • Pour the melted butter over the cake mix, covering it as well as possible.
  • Cover the casserole dish with tinfoil and bake for 15 minutes, then remove the tinfoil and continue to bake until cake mix appears cooked and no pools of melted butter remain, about 15 additional minutes.
  • Scoop and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes

  • Add a crumbly topping: After you sprinkle the cake mix on top of the cherry pie filling, mix together 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup brown sugar.
  • Sprinkle this mixture over the cake mix before baking for a delicious crunchy topping.
  • Try to get the butter to cover as much of the cake mix as possible, so that it browns nicely on the top and forms a nice crust.
  • I recommend that you grease or spray your baking dish well so that it comes out cleanly every time that you make it.
  • You could use melted chocolate chips to add a little melted chocolate drizzle to the top of the cake if you want to make this cake extra fancy.
  • If you are not using canned pie filling, you can use fresh cherries to make your own pie filling, just make sure that you use pitted cherries for this recipe. I prefer to use dark sweet cherries.
  • If you don't have a glass or ceramic baking dish on hand, you can use a dutch oven instead.
  • I like to melt the butter in a measuring cup, in the microwave. It's just so easy that way.
