You made a great piing when you said that in sports, people are typically divided into groups based on both their age and interests (for example, soccer). You explained that this is a fantastic approach for your youngster to make friends based on shared interests. I agree and will definitely look into a Youth Soccer Training program I can get my son into so he's not always on his iPad. Thanks.

How disheartening. There's so much more to sports than winning and losing. What a disappointment that the leaders aren't teaching that to the players. I'm sorry that the sports environment in your area is so unhealthy. :-(

The sports environment in my area is so incredibly toxic. My son gave a batter a raspberry (sound effect) during practice, and the coach said, "See, even that baby thinks you suck!" to the little boy. My Dad used to love playing basketball as a kid, but the coach instructed the team to funnel the basketball to the "good" kid. This got old quickly, and he quit, especially after the other coach bullied his brother for not joining track. My main gripes about sports are the influx of littering and vandalism, the noise/traffic jams, sending the kids out in 90+ weather/rain, and the sports kids being above reproach for everything in school. Are other places like this? My friend's little brother went from a polite kid to a raucous, aggressive, entitled brat after playing a few seasons at school. Maybe it's just my area. Green Bay Packers territory, if you are wondering. I will never send my son to that. It isn't a game here. It's more like an addiction that few things can stop. Is this widespread?

Agree with your post.

Once a co-worker asked me why I let my children play sports with all the time and money involved. I told her it was to help them learn life lessons. Her reply: "there are lots of other ways to teach life lessons."

"Yes," I said, "but teaching them through sports is the easiest way I know."

That conversation (and a lot of mulling it over) lead me to start my blog. I really enjoyed your article and hope to link one of my articles to it in the future.

My daughter was not a competitive person, but she did love being physical. She took Tae Kwon Do classes for many years and became a Second Degree Blackbelt. She didn't like the pressure of being perfect that others might have put on her. She put a lot of pressure on herself to be the best though!

I love the variety of sports you've exposed your children to. I wish hockey was more readily available where we live since it was one of my husband's favorites as a child. LOL. I hear what you are saying about teens!

I agree, exposure to a variety of activities is important for children (well beyond just sports). I wish I had been exposed to more things as a child when there's less pressure associated with how we perform.

An excellent post! I believe children should be introduced to all kinds of activities, but let them ultimately choose what they enjoy according to their aptitude. Sports and music ran high in our family too!

Yes, yes, and yes!! All of our kids were encouraged to try different sports from a young age, each of them finding different ones that eventually captured their interest. Hockey and soccer were the two most popular choices all around, and the ones they stayed with the longest (two of our boys still play hockey), but we have dabbled in competitive swimming, karate, dance, baseball, trampoline, and football. By introducing them to a variety of activities early on, no one was ever forced to do something they didn't like. Not only have we raised kids with an appreciation for physical activity, a healthy sense of competition, and a solid set of social skills, but I've prevented a houseful of teenagers from having too much free time on their hands...which can sometimes be an invitation for trouble :)
