Let’s face it, when it comes to home decorating no matter what your stance on gender equality, this task/privilege (depending on your viewpoint) typically falls to the feminine figure in the house. I’m not sure if it’s because we care more about the visual aesthetics of our home more or because both sides just agree we have better taste when it comes to home decorating, but whatever the reason, wives get to make their homes suit themselves and their own taste. Hubby’s framed print of “Dogs Playing Poker” and neon beer sign are relegated to the garage or attic.
Even though most husbands willingly relinquish the responsibility of home decorating, eventually they begin to complain about not having a space of their own. When my husband made this complaint, I was furious. After all, where was MY private space, my personal retreat within my home? Eventually I realized that he wasn’t asking for a room that was entirely his to use, but a space where he could display his personality.
In this room, he could hang all of his favorite artwork and display items of significance without any concern for how it fit the design motif of the rest of the house. Oddly, even though this room would be filled with items of his choice, after years of letting me make all the design decisions, he still required some assistance in choosing furniture and the layout of the room. Also, he wanted to make sure that the room was still functional for the family.
