In reply to BonJon. This is very helpful information for people about being aware of where to plant trees. We moved into our new home about 20 years ago and are now discovering that the palm tree that was planted by the builders in our front yard has probably damaged the drain pipe. So, thanks for your comment - hopefully it will help someone avoid the problem we know have.

Got sidetracked. I meant to comment on how folks (landscapers!) plant trees and shrubs too close to home foundations, electrical conduits, water sources, and septic fields without any thought to future damage the roots do. Roots do tremendous damage! I’m a retired real estate broker, so don’t get me started, either, about them forgetting the mature size of the trees, etc., which end up blocking sidewalks, windows, and, God forbid, sightlines for oncoming traffic at driveway entrances. There is an online listing, I forget its name, for how far away to plant things from foundations, pipes, etc. It also listed which trees are prone to causing the most problems.

Don’t you find that the key to true low maintenance is in plant selection and a great deal of research BEFORE you buy? There are so many different cultivars of plants, which vary widely in the light, soil, water, and general climate required to grow well. I am one of the folks who is privileged to vote plant awards (irises). Most folks believe the awards are for the “prettiest” plants. They’re not. It’s for the best performance in the garden. But even an award doesn’t mean it will grow well in your area. Just FYI: there are many irises better suited for landscaping than the more common bearded irises. Bearded irises are lovely, but don’t like mulch over top of their rhizomes. Other types love mulch, plus some have ornamental grass like foliage. I can’t plant ornamental grass, so I plant these instead.
