I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Sprint. I received a sample device to facilitate this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.
Since becoming a Sprint Ambassador, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the company I have used for my own family’s cell phone service for the past 10 years and to try out some of their amazing new products. After reviewing the Kyocera Hydro Vibe, I was certain I’d found the perfect phone. While still a big fan, I promptly bequeathed it to my husband when the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport showed up because this phone is truly the perfect phone for me. If you’re a fitness freak, or just have an appreciation for being active and fit, you will love this phone as much as I do–I promise.
First, I have to admit I was already drooling over the Samsung Galaxys before the S5 Sport showed up in the mail. I’m at the delightful age where reading glasses are in my immediate future so the beautiful, big screen of the Galaxy is literally a sight for sore eyes. See how it dwarfs my former iPhone?
But the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport is my cellphone soulmate for many more reasons than it’s big screen. The built-in pedometer is probably one of my favorite features. Last year I wrote an article about the amazing effect wearing a pedometer has on your activity level. People who have to endure my presence on a daily basis are well aware of how obsessed I am with my pedometer readings. Yes, I’m the crazy lady who jogs in place, paces or dances while waiting in lines so that I don’t waste an opportunity to beat my step goal for the day.
Another sign that this phone was made just for me (and every other fitness-minded individual) is the Sprint Fit Live feature. Basically, it’s a mobile health and finess package that tailors this phone to the exercise-conscious. It comes with a free one-year subscription to MapMyFitness MVP. I was already using MapMyFitness to track my workouts but the MVP membership grants you access to even more benefits like audio coaching and training plans. Sprint Fit Live also puts all of your favorite fitness apps right on your home screen for easy access so you can pull up your favorite workout playlist on Spotify, access your training plan on MapMyFitness and track your workout on S Health.
Unless you’ve already seen the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport, you probably don’t know about S Health. First of all, it’s the app that contains the pedometer function. The app is MUCH more than a pedometer though. You can track exercise and set workout goals. You can also track all other aspects of your health including food, weight, sleep, and stress. Stress? Did that stump you? It stumped me. And that is how I stumbled upon the absolute blow-my-mind, I-didn’t-even-know-it-was-possible feature of the phone. It has a built-in heart rate monitor!
Thankfully, the phone anticipated that I might be too dimwitted to figure out this suprisingly advanced technology and it provided me with very easy-to-follow on-screen instructions to use the stress detector and heart rate monitor. You really just have to hold your finger very still on a small sensor on the back of the phone. See? I really did figure out how to use them, here’s proof.
As you can see from my stress test results, I took the test after my kids were in bed for the evening and I had enjoyed a nice, therapeutic glass of red wine.
I know you feel like you’re reading a novel here, but what can I say? I have a lot I want to tell you about this phone since I think it’s so freaking awesome. Last thing (I promise!) that I thought was super smart and very handy is the Activity Zone. It’s another app that comes standard on the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport and it’s a barometer, compass, flashlight, and stopwatch. Ok, truth being told, I haven’t had the occasion to use all of these features at one time necessitating the ease of accessing them all from one screen, but I’m sure I’m going to bring it with me if I ever make it onto one of those adventure race shows where I have to navigate around in the dark through rough terrain.
So, you’re probably wondering if this phone will actually help you be healthier or more active. I’m going to say definitely YES. We all know the best way to stick to a diet is to let everyone know you are on a diet. That’s because the extra accountability serves as positive pressure. Well, assuming you check your phone as often as I and almost every busy mom does, what better accountability partner could you hope for? I downloaded a picture of Linda Hamilton from Terminator 2 to use as my wallpaper. Every time I look at my phone, I have her well-toned biceps confronting me, as well as all of my fitness apps– constant reminders of my goals and resources to meet them.
Want more reasons to love this phone? As part of Sprint’s offerings on this new device, the Samsung Galaxy S 5 Sport smartphone will have the added benefit of running on the Sprint Spark network, which enhances the phone’s LTE service, allowing for high quality video. Now you can watch that CrossFit WOD video on your phone as you stand in the gym getting ready to reenact it.
And remember how I told you all about Sprint’s Framily Plan a few months ago? Or perhaps you’ve seen the commercials. Well, after my teen son grumbled to me about the 1 GB of data restriction (apparently that’s not enough to stream Pandora non-stop and play Clash of Clans), I was delighted to find another option with Sprint that works even better for my family. The Sprint Family Share Pack lets a family of up to 10 members enjoy unlimited talk and text and share 20 GB of data for just $100 per month. Go ahead and shop around. When you’re done, you’ll realize that’s double the data you’d get from Verizon or AT&T at the same price.
I’d love to know your thoughts on this phone! Do you have one? Do you want one? What do you like most? What other features do you wish it had? Please let me know in the comments.
