We play a card game w/ family & friends called "QUARTERS". It can be played w/ 2-10 players or more (the more players that play, the more fun it becomes). Each player starts w/ 4 quarters each. The deck is shuffled & each player is dealt 1 card each clockwise (face down, only the player can peek at their card to know what they have). The dealer sets the remainder of the deck, face down & to the left of his card. The player to the left of the dealer goes 1st.The object of the game is to have the lowest card among all players at end of each round. If the 1st player is dealt a high card (example: 10 or higher) they can "swap" their card w/ the player to their left in hope's they end up w/ a lower card than originally dealt. The only card that cannot be swapped w a player to their left is a KING. The player on your right can "TAKE or SWAP" your KING but you cannot "SWAP" w/ the player on your left it (KING's are the highest card & you really want it out of your hand & hope someone takes it from you). If the next player feels they were dealt a low card (ACE's being the lowest) they can say "I STAY" then play goes to the next player in turn. When play gets around to the dealer, the dealer then flips his card face up & they have the option to either "STAY" w/ their card OR draw 1 card from the remainder of the deck. Only 1 card can be drawn & that card must be played. Once the dealer has kept his originally dealt card or has taken a new card from the deck, all players then turn their cards over (face up). Who ever has the highest card among all players, including the dealer, must put 1 of their quarters in the center of the table or "The POT". If there's a tie between any player(s) cards, each player in the "TIE" must put a quarter in the "Pot". If a player has lost all of their quarters, they get to continue play until they lose a round & are now out of the game. This last "free" play or round is called "Being on GRACE" (I've witnessed many players survive round after round & end up winning the entire game. A player wins when all other players have lost their quarters & their final round while being on Grace. The winner gets the POT.

I agree with having a deck of cards handy. We always have a deck in the car also. This has been a great way to teach my children with concentration, memory, math, strategy, and sportsmanship. My 7yo recently wanted me to teach him pinochle and he loves it!
