The formula for getting and staying healthy is pretty simple in theory. Eat right, exercise regularly, and drink lots of water. It’s easy in the sense that you don’t need a PhD to figure it out. Most of us don’t stray from healthy living because we don’t understand how to do it, it’s because doing it takes some work and sometimes we get tired of the work.
Proper Hydration Is Important
I have written several articles to help keep you on track when it comes to nutrition and exercise. However, I haven’t addressed proper hydration yet since it is the hardest one for me to master. Yes, I’d rather get up and workout every morning at dawn than drink water all day. I realize that sounds ridiculous, but in order to drink 64 ounces of water each day I have to work at it! And since the only time plain water sounds good to me is at the end of a workout when I am dying of thirst and am tempted to lick my own perspiration (only tempted, I’ve never actually done it), hydration after 7 am is a real chore.
Coffee Or Soda Aren’t Good Alternatives
Just in case there are a few of you out there who are under the false assumption that coffee, tea and soda are good alternatives, I need to alert you to the fact that the dehydrating properties of the caffeine contained within them actually require you to consume MORE water to counteract them. So for every cup of coffee or can of soda you consume, you should be drinking an extra glass or two of water.
So what’s a person to do if she wants to drink enough water each day but feels tortured by the process? Make the water taste better!
How Do You Make Water Taste Better?
I have tried a few different flavoring strategies. Sometimes I will add a squirt of lemon, lime, or orange juice to my water. I am the only person in my family for whom this technique works for though since everyone else complains that a squirt doesn’t add enough flavor. They prefer lemonade or orange juice, which though it does provide hydration it also delivers a big dose of sugar and calories. Also, while I enjoy the slight flavor change from the citrus, even that gets boring after a while (and those commercials about acidity stripping your tooth enamel away start to panic me) so my water consumption only increases a little using this technique.
My family prefers powdered and liquid flavor additives like Crystal Light and Mio. These options provide a variety of flavors, have little to no calories, and allow each person to tailor his or her drink to taste by adding more or less of the additive. We do buy these occasionally, but they are too expensive for me to add to our regular grocery list even if I buy the non-name brand versions.
Wyler’s Light For Low-Calorie Flavored Water
Recently, I discovered Wyler’s Light which provides the same benefits as Crystal Light and Mio without draining our grocery budget. At our local CVS, which is typically more expensive than our grocery stores and superstores, a box of 8 singles-to-go packets was only $1. That’s right, you can enjoy delicious, low-calorie flavored water every day for an entire week for just $1!
If you get bored easily, like me, don’t worry because you can stock up on all their flavors and enjoy a new one each day. They have so many flavors, you could go over 2 weeks without repeating one. Here’s a list of all the flavors Wyler’s Light offers:
· Pink Lemonade
· Raspberry Lemonade
· Strawberry Lemonade
· Cool Raspberry
· Cherry Limeade
· Fruit Punch
· Kiwi Strawberry
· Sunsplash Orange
· Iced Tea with Lemon
· Iced Tea with Peach
· Iced Tea with Raspberry
· Half Iced Tea and Half Lemonade
· NEW! Cherry Berry
I bought Pink Lemonade since everyone in my family loves lemonade and my 6 year old campaigned for her favorite color. We all really liked this flavor. I really could sip on this all day. In fact, I filled up my 24 oz. water bottle twice yesterday using the pink lemonade to flavor the water and had no trouble drinking it all. Since I had guzzled 24 oz of water during tennis yesterday morning, this marked the first day I had surpassed my 64 oz. water goal in over a month!
Unfortunately, the new cherry berry flavor isn’t available near me yet. I was looking forward to using it to make sugar-free popsicles to satisfy my sweet tooth after dinner. For now, I’ll use grape.
I do want to point out that plain water is always your BEST choice since it is naturally free from sugar; artificial sweeteners, flavors and coloring; and preservatives. However, if you have a hard time consuming enough water each day, Wyler’s Light will definitely help you drink more water. It’s a much better alternative than sugary sodas and juices and it’s more affordable than similar products.
