Rocky Road is the 10th book in the culinary mystery series by Josi L. Kilpack. Since the series follows the exploits of Sadie Hoffmiller, it is helpful to read the books in order. However, this was my first time reading one of Ms. Kilpack’s books and I was able to follow the plot and appreciate the characters without the background information shared in the previous books. The main character alludes to many dramatic events that have led to her current attitude and position in book ten, which I assume occur in earlier books but Kilpack manages to do this without giving away any of the details that might otherwise ruin the suspense of those stories.
Rocky Road finds Sadie in a small town in Utah accompanying her good friend Caro on what is intended to be a fun girls’ weekend. Before long, she finds herself pulled into the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Hendricks, a beloved doctor in the community whose work in cancer treatment and philanthropic contributions to cancer research are admired by many local residents.
As Sadie meets people while seeking leads into Dr. Hendricks’ disappearance, she is treated to many culinary treats and generously shares the recipes she collects along the way. I honestly would have bought the book just for the recipes, but Ms. Kilpack allows you to download and/or print the recipes for free from her website.
I don’t want to give away too much of the plot so I’ll limit my remarks to why you will love this book. Aside from the amazing recipes, the story itself is extremely well-written. The characters are realistic, as are their actions, conversations, and interactions with one another. I have a bad habit of trying to predict where a story is going, especially when reading mysteries, and I was kept guessing throughout the entire book. Like real life, the people and events are understandable but not entirely predictable, keeping the reader engaged and in suspense from start to finish.
For those of you unfamiliar with the series, you may be surprised (as I was) by the spiritual lean of the book. You don’t have to be particularly religious to enjoy the book but if you are the references throughout the book will draw you in deeper. For non-spiritual readers, the references are sparse enough that they shouldn’t interfere with your enjoyment of the book.
Overall, I really enjoyed Rocky Road. In fact, I have already ordered the other books in the series because the writing is so engaging and because I can’t wait to learn more about Sadie’s history.
