Health Benefits of Blueberry Smoothies

Blueberries are tiny little superfoods. Packed with antioxidants, they pack a lot of nutrients into a small, low-calorie package. You get a generous dose of fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and manganese in every one cup serving of blueberries.

Sure, you could just snack on a bowl of blueberries. But when you blend them into a smoothie, you get even more health benefits. Smoothies are one of the fastest and easiest ways to enjoy a healthy breakfast or snack.

Smoothies take very little time to prepare and you can easily consume healthy foods that you might not be as excited about eating on their own (e.g. kale or chia seeds). Plus, your body absorbs nutrients better in liquid form so you get an even bigger nutritional boost when you drink smoothies.

How to Make a Blueberry Smoothie

If you love blueberries and want them to be the star of your smoothie, follow this simple recipe:

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Garnish with fresh blueberries if desired.

Pro Tips

You can use fresh blueberries instead of frozen, if you prefer. I like to use frozen though since it eliminates the need to add ice cubes to the smoothie which can dilute it.

For a thicker smoothie, use Greek yogurt and reduce the amount of milk. Greek yogurt will provide more protein and add less sugar, but regular yogurt has fewer calories and more calcium.

Use whatever milk you like! Dairy milk (e.g. skim, 2%, or whole) or non-dairy milk (almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, etc.).

If you like a little more sweetness, add 1 teaspoon of sweetener: sugar, artificial sweetener, honey or maple syrup.

Add Ins

Add flavor, nutrients and texture to your smoothie with different ingredients. Good choices are:

  • Fruit: Avocado, banana, berries, mango, pineapple
  • Nut butters: Almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter
  • Seeds: Chia seeds, flax seed
