My family loves to spend time together outdoors. One of our favorite family activities is playing badminton since it’s one of the few sports where everyone from my first grader to my high school junior can fully participate. Unfortunately, I suffer from seasonal congestion which often interferes with my ability to enjoy this outdoor fun with my family. Congestion also interfere with my ability to run since it interferes with my ability to breathe easily.

I know there are a lot of over-the-counter remedies out there to help combat seasonal congestion. In dire circumstances, I do turn to them. However, since I typically suffer all season long (usually 2-3 months at a time), I prefer to use natural remedies so that I don’t have to worry about side effects from prolonged use of chemicals or medicine.

So, what are your options if you don’t want to rely on medicine?

Neti Pot

A neti pot is a small, ceramic pot that kind of looks like a tea pot. You fill it with salt water and use it to rinse out your nasal passages. This is great for clearing out mucus and it’s completely natural so you don’t have to worry about exposing yourself to chemicals or harmful ingredients.

Humidifier

Increasing the humidity in your home can help relieve congestion. Humidifiers simply add moisture to the air. Again, no harmful chemicals. Just water (steam).

Hot Shower

If you don’t have a humidifier and don’t want to buy one, you can reap some of the same benefits (at least temporarily) by taking a hot shower. The steam from the shower will loosen up the mucus blocking your nasal passages.

Drink Water

I know it sounds strange, but by staying well hydrated, you can thin the mucus that’s blocking your nasal passages thereby reducing the risk of congestion.

Warm Compresses

When congestion is really uncomfortable or painful, a warm towel held against your nose or forehead can help relieve some of the pressure.
