Paris is famed for its gastronomic attractions, but at what price? Eating the local specialties is all part of a Parisian experience. Check out the best ways to dine on a budget in Paris and still have a good time.
Pack a Picnic
Crusty French bread and local cheese are the ideal ingredient for a delicious and inexpensive picnic. You’ll find boulangeries and delis close to many of the hotels in Paris. Don’t forget to visit the famous markets like the Marche Raspail, where you’ll be spoiled for choice with all the gastronomic delights.
Eat in Foyer De La Madeleine
The Foyer De La Madeleine is one of the most famous clusters of gourmet boutiques in Paris with champagne, foie gras and delicate pastries. What many visitors to Paris don’t realize is that in the middle of the square beneath Madeleine Church is a simple canteen located in a historic tunnel. This café serves an amazing but simple French three-course meal for around 8 Euros. First-time users have to pay a small membership fee of 5 Euros, but it’s still a steal.
Bistro Victoires
Close to Hotel du Louvre you’ll find some excellent bistros that serve cheap and delicious meals. One of the best is the Bistro Victoires, which has a typical French gourmet menu at a reasonable price. Check out the plat du jour for the daily special.
Eat Vietnamese
There’s a large Vietnamese community in Paris. There are several good and cheap Vietnamese restaurants in the 13th Arrondissement. Try Le Bambou or L’Indochine for a tasty Southeast Asian meal at a bargain price. Specialties include marinated pork with beansprouts.
Dine Differently
In Paris, timing is everything when it comes to eating cheaply. Lunch is generally cheaper than eating an evening meal, so check out the midday specials. Look out for the set menu known as, “une formule.” This gives diners two or three choices of food at a discount. When drinking, avoid soft drinks and fizzy water as they cost more. You’ll also find it cheaper to drink a cup of coffee inside a café than on the terrace outside where the bill will rise for that street view.
With foodie treats close to most Paris hotels, check out the cheaper alternatives for a budget vacation.
