Our lives take place on our furniture, especially the couch. The family gathers there to connect, watch TV or snack. Throw in some pets, and you’ve got prime conditions for a couch that’s in need of a good cleaning on a regular basis. Some fabrics can be spot cleaned without trouble, but others are more complicated. Microfiber is a popular choice for sofas thanks to its durability and softness, but it can show stains more clearly than other materials. Here’s how to keep your microfiber couch in tip-top shape and extend its life.

How to Clean a Microfiber Couch

Arm Yourself

Professional cleaning companies may charge more for microfiber furniture, so spare yourself the expense and tackle the job yourself. Besides, if your kids spill grape juice on the sofa on the weekend, you won’t want to wait to call someone on Monday. Here are the items you need.

  • White stiff-bristled brush
  • White sponge
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Spray bottle

Time to Work

After you have these tools assembled, pour the rubbing alcohol into the spray bottle. We are using rubbing alcohol because it works like water but evaporates more quickly, meaning the couch will be dry and back in business in a shorter amount of time. Plus, there won’t be any water spots. Now you get to scrub.

  • Spray the couch stains with rubbing alcohol. Really saturate the fabric.
  • Use your sponge to scrub the stains vigorously. If the sponge gets dirty, swap it out for a new one.
  • Let the fabric dry. It may feel a little crusty to the touch, but don’t worry.

Finish Up

The couch will take a while to dry, and while it does, you can turn on a ceiling fan or open a window to help move the process along and to decrease the scent of rubbing alcohol. Then it’s time for the final steps.

  • When the couch is dry, use the bristle brush in a swirling motion to fluff up the fibers in the area you just cleaned. This will bring the microfiber back to its original appearance.
  • If you have any rings where you sprayed the alcohol, start the process over, being certain to saturate the fabric where the ring is.
  • Spot clean stains using this method as needed in the future, perhaps on a monthly basis or when spills happen.

Microfiber can seem a daunting fabric to work with, but using these steps, you should be able to keep your couch looking and ready for some family time.
